APA’s Ambassadors Program Promotes Diversity, Is Fun, and Earns You AICP Credit

October marks the opening of APA’s application period for the 2018 Ambassadors Program.  This initiative has been created to reach future planners with diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.  With recent national events, it is critical for the field of planning to grow more inclusive and diverse to continue to be relevant to communities of color and disadvantaged populations.  It is also increasingly important for individual planners to connect to young people in these communities on a personal level to support just decisions and live up to the APA code of ethics.

The Start of Future City 2017-2018 Is Around the Corner

It’s summer again: warm weather, poolside Sundays, seasonally-appropriate ice cream eating, and no school! School has now been out for a couple of weeks, and we’ve all forgotten what it’s like to get stuck in school traffic in the morning. However, the 2017-2018 schoolyear will be starting before you know it, and APAPASE wants to remind all of its members that there are many opportunities to volunteer for the upcoming 2018 Future City Competition for middle schoolers.

The Philadelphia Region Future City Steering Committee is hosting an Engineering Fair for future participants and collaborators in September. APAPASE encourages all interested schools, future mentors, volunteer judges, and event volunteers to attend.

Future City Philadelphia – Mentors and Volunteers Needed

It’s that time of year again.  Hopefully everyone had a great summer.  I can’t believe it’s over!   The school year is off to a great start.  To date 43  schools have signed up and have started designing their cities of the future.

Our greatest need at this stage of the competition is for mentors. Each school is assigned a mentor to work with the students and share their real world experiences to help them develop their future city.   Just 1 or 2 hours a week can make a big difference in how students approach their project and how they start to address it.  The following is a the current list of schools that need mentors:

“The Landscape” with Deputy Mayor Alan Greenberger

September 23rd 6:00 PM

Meyerson Hall: 34th and Walnut, Upper Gallery

Cost: Free—Free with eventbrite registration

Have you ever listened to a presentation and wondered how this person got their job? How did they get this far? What projects are they most proud of? What are their biggest regrets? APAPASE’s events committee has designed a new series called “The Landscape” where these types of questions will be answered! The concept is similar to “Inside the Actors Studio”. Prestigious planners nominated by APA’s members will answer a set of questions with a live audience. This event is the first APA PA SE Mentor Program event and will serve as a great opportunity for mentors to meet up with their students.

We’re honored to have Deputy Mayor Greenberger as our first speaker. Alan Greenberger is the Deputy Mayor for Economic Development and Director of Commerce. He also serves as Chairman of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission. He has been with the City of Philadelphia since 2008.
