March 1: 2018 Edmund N. Bacon Awards + Talk Honoring Enrique Peñalosa

Join the Center for Design and Architecture in honoring Enrique Peñalosa and the student winners of the 2018 Better Philadelphia Challenge. Enrique Peñalosa was selected to receive the 2018 Edmund N. Bacon Award because of the world-wide influence his pioneering initiatives as mayor of Bogotá, Colombia have had on public transportation, infrastructure investment, and public space, including on cities such as Philadelphia and New York City.

The 2018 Better Philadelphia Challenge coincides with the 100th anniversary of Philadelphia’s Benjamin Franklin Parkway. This year’s challenge, Philadelphia’s Next ‘Park+Way’ asked student teams to share their grand vision of what a new ‘Parkway’ could be in a dense and developed 21st century city and how Philadelphia’s existing natural and cultural resources could be better linked with their neighboring communities. Come meet the winning teams and see their visions for the next great Philadelphia Parkway.

The ceremony will be followed by a coffee + dessert reception for all in attendance.

The Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership (TTF) presents NATURE TALKSa series of annual, thought-provoking conversations with Author RICHARD LOUV on The Nature Rich Life: Nature-rich cities, homes, schools and more. Followed by a Meet the Author Reception. Proceeds from this program will fund TTF outreach and education programs. Louv’s books are available to purchase in advance or at the reception from the Open Book Bookstore. This program is sponsored by the Scattergood Foundation.

Feb. 26: Queer Urbanist Exchange (QUE) Quizzo Night

Queer Urbanist Exchange (QUE) is invites you to join our monthly meet up at Tavern at 243 S. Camac St. (Downstairs at Tavern on Camac) at 8:00 pm on Monday, February 26. Note we will be starting later than usual and meeting downstairs to join long time (maybe founding?) member Simone Allender for Quizzo at 8:30 pm, so stay for a drink or bring your trivia knowledge. It was really popular in December and one of our teams won.

We’re going to do brief updates on our projects before quizzo starts (around 8:15). Please come with ideas of things you’d like to see the group participate in. If you’re interested in seeing more, check out our Meeting Notes from our past meetings.

Don’t forget to apply to APA’s Ambassador Program by December 31

As the end of year quickly approaches, so is the December 31 deadline to apply to become an APA Ambassador.  This important initiative is designed to encourage future planners with diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.  The application is short and easy to fill out, even during the end of year crunch.  Participation in the program will provide valuable skills and earn you up to 8 pro-bono AICP CM credits in 2018.

Check out our previous blog post with all the important information on the application and details of the program.  You can apply as an individual or as a team.  Contact Al Beatty at ab5562@nyu.edu if you would like to join the local team of ambassadors.  Thank you Al for stepping up to be a regional team leader!

AICP members can obtain up to eight CM Credits for Pro Bono Planning Service, as outlined on the APA National website at https://www.planning.org/cm/logging/selfreport/probono

APA Future City Mentorship could relate to these allowed activities:

  • Planning-related support to groups that lack adequate planning resources, including service that expands choices and opportunities for everyone.
  • Planning to meet the needs of the disadvantaged and to promote racial and economic integration.
  • Mentoring the development of students, interns, beginning professionals, colleagues, and members of underrepresented groups to help them advance in the planning profession.

Economic Development Division Holzheimer Memorial Student Scholarship

Applications due February 2, 2018

The Economic Development Division is currently accepting applications for the Holzheimer Memorial Student Scholarship for Economic Development Planning. Though applications are not due until February 2, early submissions are encouraged. Applicants must be Master’s level students currently enrolled in or recently graduated (2016 or later) from PAB-accredited planning programs in the United States.

The scholarship is named in memory of longtime APA member and economic development visionary, Dr. Terry Holzheimer of Arlington County, Virginia and Virginia Tech. The $2,000 award is a scholarship provided by the APA’s Economic Development Division. Winners are strongly encouraged but not required to use the award money to support attendance at the APA National Planning Conference. The application materials should include an original student paper or work that is 2,500 words or less (including citations and footnotes), and must include the name and contact information of a faculty member involved in supervising the student and/or the submitted work. Future City Mentors Needed – One Month until Competition Day

If you’ve been looking for a way to give back this holiday season, become a Future City mentor for a school in your community. 10 Future City Philadelphia teams still need mentors, and the students could really use your support in the final days leading up to the regional competition. Students must prepare a model of an “Age-Friendly City” to present in front of a panel of judges on Saturday, January 20, 2018.

As a planner, you can provide meaningful feedback and assistance as the students creatively tackle this topic.

The following 10 middle schools need mentors:

  • Mother Teresa – King of Prussia
  • Murray Avenue – Huntingdon Valley
  • St Albert the Great – Huntingdon Valley

Nov. 15: APAPASE 2017 Annual Event: Water, Water Everywhere

Join us for APAPASE’s Annual Event, which includes an opportunity to meet and mingle with other Greater Philadelphia planners, hear an educational presentation (1 CM credit requested), and honor the winners of the John E. Water, Water Everywhere: A Dialogue on Flooding and Disasters in Greater Philadelphia

The 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season is on track to be one of the top ten most active seasons on record, with five major hurricanes, and a streak of eight straight hurricanes from August 9 to September 29. This begs the question: what is the role of planners and planning in reducing risk to flooding and increasing community resilience? How can flood risk reduction meet other community planning goals, like water quality improvement, neighborhood development, and community cohesion? Join us at the APAPASE Annual Event to explore these issues and more. A panel of water and resilience planners will explore these issues and more with APA members from across the region.

Apply for Philadelphia Citizen Planning Institute by 9/20!

Citizens Planning Institute (CPI) will be accepting applications for the Fall 2017 course from August 30th – September 20th. This seven-week course empowers citizens to take a more effective and active role in shaping the future of their neighborhoods and of Philadelphia through a greater understanding of city planning and the steps involved in development projects.

Special topics this session include Diversifying Your Organization, Fixing Neighborhood Issues – L&I and 311, and Resources for Neighborhood Development. There are more details on the courses in Fall 2017 CPI course summaries.

Classes are held on Wednesday evenings October 11th – November 15th from 6-9 pm at 1515 Arch Street in Center City.
