Breaking Ground 2018: Transforming a Region Together is a day-long conference that aims highlights the principles and goals of Connections 2045 Long-Range Plan for Greater Philadelphia [https://www.dvrpc.org/Connections2045/]. While our region is made up of 352 local governments, we will be better-positioned and more economically competitive if we move forward together, as a region. This year’s conference celebrates regional cooperation and government efficiency. The keynote speaker—Brian Elms—is an expert in management and government performance. All attendees will receive a copy of Brian Elms’ book, PeakPerformance: How Denver’s Peak Academy is saving millions of dollars, boosting morale, and just maybe changing the world.

Concurrent sessions will feature government transparency, sustainable environmental practices, collaboration between businesses and government, the use of data and metrics, and a celebration of diversity age-friendly communities. Breaking Ground 2018 is expanding to include a Learning Lounge, which will feature businesses and tech companies that assist municipal governments in better serving their citizens.

Planners can have the greatest ideas in the world, but without politicians to enact them into policy or set aside money in a budget to implement them, the plans will wind up sitting on a shelf. That’s why elections matter to planning.

In Philadelphia, Mayor Nutter’s second term will be up at the end of 2015. All 17 seats on City Council will also be on the ballot, as well as Sheriff, Register of Wills, three slots on the City Commission, and a number of state and municipal judgeships. But in a predominantly one-party city like Philadelphia, sometimes it’s the primary that’s more important than the general election. This year’s primary is coming up on Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Several organizations are organizing events to help you learn more about the candidates and where they stand on the issues–particularly related to planning.

There’s a huge mayoral election next spring–what matters most to you?

The Great Millennial Mouth Off is a night of debate and dialogue, a friendly competition designed to surface ideas that can move Philadelphia forward in three critical areas: Economic Development, Education and City Planning. Using unique conversation stickers, attendees will expand on, challenge, and bring focus to ideas while naturally mingling and moving throughout the room. Prizes will be awarded not only for the best ideas, but for ideas that generate the most conversation.

Have you ever listened to a presentation and wondered how this person got their job? How did they get this far? What projects are they most proud of? What are their biggest regrets? APAPASE’s events committee has designed a new series called “The Landscape” where these types of questions will be answered! The concept is similar to “Inside the Actors Studio”. Prestigious planners nominated by APA’s members will answer a set of questions with a live audience. This event is the first APA PA SE Mentor Program event and will serve as a great opportunity for mentors to meet up with their students.

We’re honored to have Deputy Mayor Greenberger as our first speaker. Alan Greenberger is the Deputy Mayor for Economic Development and Director of Commerce. He also serves as Chairman of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission. He has been with the City of Philadelphia since 2008.

6:15 P.M.             A Philadelphia Land Bank: An Approach to Addressing Vacant Property … Jill Feldstein, Organizing and Advocacy Coordinator, Women’s Community Revitalization Project

A land bank is a public authority created to efficiently handle acquisition, maintenance, and sale of vacant properties. Land banks are a best practice that more than 75 governments have adopted, including Cleveland, Louisville, and Atlanta. The creation of a land bank authority is currently being discussed in Philadelphia; on October 28, the Public Property and Public Works Committee of Philadelphia City Council held a hearing on the Philadelphia Land Bank legislation. The Committee voted to give the bill a favorable recommendation meaning that it can now move to the full Council. Ms. Feldstein, one of the authors of the Philadelphia land bank legislation, will discuss issues surrounding land banks and next steps for Philadelphia.

 

6:45 P.M.             The Urban Garden Initiative… Aissia Richardson, Vice President of Operations, Uptown Entertainment & Development Corp

The Urban Garden Initiative transformed a vacant lot with rampant dumping, prostitution, and drug dealing to a meeting space for Philadelphia’s Broad Street community. Ms. Richardson will present the history, challenges, and issues surrounding the revitalization of this formerly vacant lot on North Broad Street.
