As part of the 2014 Spring Planning Forums – Making It Great Now, Andrew Howard, AICP of Team Better Block, a leading expert in placemaking and transportation, will be keynoting a day of sessions focused on revitalization and engaging communities in their future. Andrew and additional sessions throughout the day will address strategies and methods that can be rapidly deployed, quickly implemented and readily realized to advance local community engagement and revitalization objectives. The forum will focus on the how-to and hands-on of creative asset mobilization, organizational structure, community capacity building, institutional support and civic engagement. The local option is May 13, 2014 in Allentown. 5.25 CMs are pending approval for the event, including 1.5 ethics credits.

April 10: Planning Matters: Demographic Change and Land Use Policies
This year’s annual training series, which is a joint venture of APA-PA and DCED, features Todd Poole of 4ward Planning and Mark Keener of The RBA Group. Planning Matters: Demographic Change and Land Use Policies will focus on the significant demographic changes occurring in the United States (from an aging population, to a more ethnically diverse population, to a more diverse household formation population) and developing land use strategies that are not only market receptive but also fiscally prudent. The series will take place in four locations across the state, with the Lower Merion Township Building in Ardmore hosting the southeast session on the morning of April 10th. Feb. 19: Managing Complex Relationships in Planning (1.5 CM credits)
Planning commissioners and planners are often at the crux of intersecting values, demands, and viewpoints and finding the means to keep moving forward (and remain personally balanced) can be a challenge. Gain insight into managing varied and complex working relationships—political, professional, personal, and role-related. The experienced panel shares insights into managing different personalities and maintaining a vision through difficult circumstances. This program is suitable for planning commissioners and planners.

Dec. 6: Disaster Recovery Webinar
The PA Chapter is pleased that FEMA Region III – headquartered in Philadelphia – is providing our contribution to the free chapters, divisions, and universities webcast series. The National Disaster Recovery Framework and Planning for Post-Disaster Recovery session will be held on December 6th from 1:00 – 2:30 pm. The National Disaster Recovery Framework is a guide that defines how a community can work together following a disaster to best meet recovery needs. This session will discuss the Framework’s core principles as well as best practices and lessons learned from post-disaster recovery plans completed in communities in Pennsylvania. Approval of 1.5 CMs for the session is pending. Registration is via the Utah Chapter of APA website at www.utah-apa.org/webcasts.

Ethics and Law CM at Design on the Delaware
Planners can earn both their Ethics and Law AICP CM at Design on the Delaware conference October 29 – November 1 in Philadelphia.
The conference, in its 11th year, offers 23 AICP CM accredited programs in addition to the ethics and law courses. Programs cover a range of planning topics including form based zoning, campus planning, Skyplane regulations, SITES rating system, and numerous programs focused on urban and suburban projects. Planners can earn up to 25 AICP CM at the conference.
Oct. 16: Using Brick for Resilient Structures in Communities
An opportunity to earn 3 CM credits at the Center for Architecture, on October 16th. The event is held each year in DC and Baltimore with attendance selling out. This is a great opportunity to interact and hear from other disciplines, which often results in a lively Q&A.
