Emerging Arts Leaders: Philadelphia is pleased to announce Creative Conversation 2016, a one-day symposium gathering arts leaders from the Greater Philadelphia region. The event, featuring a keynote speech from PECO’s Tiffany Tavarez, will take place on Saturday, October 1, 10 am, at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (100 N. 20th St., fifth floor).

This year’s Creative Conversation follows last year’s successful “What’s Next?” event by breaking open the traditional conference format to engage participants in a daylong dialogue about the myriad ways that the arts shape our region, and how we as arts leaders can promote and support the arts in and around Philadelphia. After a morning keynote speech from Tiffany Tavarez, corporate contributions manager at PECO, attendees will divide into fast-paced facilitated discussions with local arts leaders on the ways that the arts intersect with fields and topics ranging from government, policy and community to education, entrepreneurship and social justice.

Mentor Future Planners!

For the ninth year, the American Planning Association of Southeast Pennsylvania (APAPASE) is launching a mentor program for professionals in the planning field and local city planning graduate students. The program will include students from the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University. This program has helped students to learn about the array of planning jobs in the real world, the day-to-day job duties of planners, and employment advice for planners on the job hunt.

If you are willing to mentor, please sign up here by Friday, September 30. Mentors agree to be available 2-3 times throughout the year to meet with their student on an informal basis and will have the opportunity to meet with their mentees at events sponsored by the APAPASE.

Register Today for Course in Zoning

The Delaware County Planning Department is sponsoring the Course in Zoning during the evenings of September 22, 29, and October 6. This “nuts and bolts” course deals with the most complex and provocative topic in local planning. It stresses the fundamentals for developing a sound zoning ordinance using the authority granted in the PA Municipalities Planning Code. The course includes mapping exercises, reviews of ordinance provisions, and discussions of problem situations.

Topics include:
· Relationship of zoning to comprehensive plans
· Key terms used in zoning and how they are applied
· Critical issues in drafting a zoning ordinance and map
· Procedures for adopting and amending ordinances
· Basic zoning administration

For the 9^th year in a row, Philadelphia will celebrate PARK(ing) Day. This year, PARK(ing) Day falls on Friday, September 16, 2016. PARK(ing) Day is a worldwide annual event that started in San Francisco in 2005, when people transformed metered parking spaces into temporary public parks. The event raises awareness about the need for more pedestrian-friendly spaces in urban areas—in small 170 square foot spaces all across the world. A variety of non-profit institutions, community development organizations, academic institutions, and private companies—including many planning agencies and companies—participate in setting up these colorful, temporary parks. Due to a schedule conflict, Anne Fadullon is not available to speak at Inside the Planner’s Studio. We are happy to announce that Patty Elkis, Director of Planning at the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) will be the featured guest on Inside the Planner’s Studio.

6:30-7:00: The event will begin with networking. Light h’orderves and drinks will be provided. Mentors and students from the mentor program will have the opportunity to meet during this time.

APAPASE’s “Inside the Planner’s Studio” series asks these questions and more. We’re honored to have Patty Elkis, Director of Planning at the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, as our 3rd speaker in the annual “Inside the Planners Studio” speaker series. Karen Thompson of the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation will be asking Ms. Elkis about her career, civic engagement, and her advice for planners. Karen will skip the small talk and ask Ms. Elkis the big questions: What pivotal moments have shaped her career? If she could go back, would she do anything differently?
