Call for Mentors for Planning Students

Remember when you were a planning student and weren’t sure which concentration to choose or how to navigate the job market? 

For the seventh year, the American Planning Association of Southeast Pennsylvania (APAPA-SE) is launching a mentor program to connect professionals in the planning field and local city planning graduate students. The program will include students from the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University. This program has helped students to learn about an array of planning jobs and day to day work responsibilities of planners as well as to receive advice for navigating the job and internship search.

If you are interested in signing up to be a mentor, please fill out this form and email your resume to planningmentorpa@gmail.com.  We are asking mentors to submit materials by Wednesday, September 10th.

Professional Development Scholarships Deadline: August 29

There are two Professional Development Awards being offered by APA-PA at this time.  These are great opportunities to grow your planning skill set without making such a dent in your wallet.  The deadline to apply is August 29, 2014.

  1. Jerry S. Walls, FAICP Planning Professional Development Award –  $2000.00 will be awarded to the Pennsylvania applicant who demonstrates commitment in the field of community planning, involvement in public sector planning, and a desire to enhance their expertise and/or develop new skills.
  2. Irving Hand, FAICP Excellence in Planning Professional Development Award – $2,500.00 will be awarded to an outstanding Pennsylvania applicant who demonstrates excellence in the field of community planning, and a desire to enhance their expertise and/or develop new skills.

APA PA SE AICP Study Group for November 2014 Test

Consider joining our study group to prepare for the AICP test in November! We will use existing resources such as the AICP site, Planning Prep and information from our colleagues who have taken the test and divide by planning subject to make for efficient studying. Most communication and sharing will be via email; there will be just a few meetings in person to initially divide the materials and also test each other toward the end. Every year, PHS Pop Up Gardens transform neglected spaces into lush and inviting places for all to enjoy. Combining cutting-edge design, outdoor art, and landscape innovation, the gardens showcase the work that PHS performs in communities all year long.  PHS Pop Up Gardens leave a lasting impact by shining a light on vacant spaces with potential for redevelopment, as well as promoting the power of greening to transform cities.

From June through mid-October, we will be transforming an empty lot in Center City into a beautiful garden with daily food offerings, a nighttime beer garden, and ongoing entertainment!For the past three years, volunteers have been key to making garden visits a friendly, enjoyable and educational experience.  We hope you will join us this year in welcoming our guests, helping to maintain the beautiful garden, and sharing the mission of PHS to create a sense of community through horticulture.

Please take this brief community planning survey to assist new graduates; it will take four minutes or less of your time. The survey is designed for all planning professionals representing the broad range of specializations, workplace environments, and geographic locations. The Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA-PA) is kicking off the “Great Places in Pennsylvania” Program. Great Places are unique, memorable places where people want to be – not only to visit, but to live and work every day. They serve as a model that other communities want to emulate – places of exemplary character, quality planning, identity, cultural interest and community involvement with a sustainable vision for the future.

For this first year, the nomination categories are Great Neighborhoods and Great Public Places. Specific criteria have been developed for each category. The Great Neighborhoods criteria relate to form & function, character & identity, and environmental & economic challenges. Criteria for Great Public Spaces relate to form & function, unique characteristics, and social interaction.
