Aug. 17: 9th Street Italian Market Tour

Planners might be interested in an upcoming tour of the Italian Market arranged by Young Involved Philadelphia (YIP) The 9th Street Italian Market is at the heart of one of the most vibrant neighborhoods in Philadelphia. It is also one of the oldest and largest outdoor markets in the US. Discover the tastes, sounds, and history of this eclectic shopping and eating emporium during this fascinating food tour. Talk to charismatic shop owners, purchase an array of fresh and specialty food, and learn about this area’s wonderful history. We’ll end the tour near Pat’s King of Steaks, so you can choose to stick around and order a cheesesteak wit or without for lunch. Tickets cost $20 and must be reserved in advance. Bring extra cash if you want to buy a cheesesteak afterward. Tour starts at 9th & South at 10:30 AM and ends at 12:30 PM. Remember to wear comfortable shoes!

The John C. Anderson Housing Project is a significant precedent affordable housing development in Center City Philadelphia that has been undertaken to specifically address the needs of senior citizens in Center City Philadelphia. In the gay community, this demographic group has been overlooked in programming and community planning initiatives until recently. Lessons learned will be shared for an in-house and national (via webinar) audience, highlighting the project management/development, senior programming, LGBT needs, funding, and planning perspectives.

Join a panel of local experts who will provide an overview of considerations for developing a renewable energy ordinance for solar, small-wind, and geothermal energy systems in Pennsylvania. An overview of Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission’s (DVRPC’s) Renewable Energy Ordinance Frameworks, which include a menu of permissive and restrictive ordinance language options; accompanied by explanatory guidance on the barriers, benefits and cautions for adopting language will be provided. Additionally, panelists will address the key issues surrounding the regulation of each type of renewable energy system at the municipal level.

This session is a part of the 2013 Greenbuild Challenge.

Interested in helping to plan planning events? Join us on the phone or in person at DVRPC for the Events Committee Meeting at 5:30 on June 12! We also welcome your suggestions even if you aren’t able to attend.

The goal of this meeting is to discuss the details of various events (PDI, Emerging Professionals, CM credited events, Happy Hours, Annual Event), to make recommendations of action to the Council. At every Council meeting various issues come up related to events that aren’t fully flushed out in the limited format.

As part of APAPASE’s participation in the Greenbuild 2013 Challenge pledge, APAPASE will be partnering with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) Young Friends group for a tour of the PECO headquarters Green Roof on Thursday, June 27, 2013 at 5:30pm. There will be a happy hour after the tour at Bistro St. Tropez. PECO is located at 2301 Market Street in Philadelphia.

In addition to presentations by Moira Baylson of Philadelphia’s Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy and Larry Eichel, of Pew’s Philadelphia Research Initiative, Michelle Freeman of Flying Kite Media will moderate a panel of creative economy businesses. The panelists include Seun Olubodun, owner of Duke & Winston, a clothing design company in Philadelphia, and Bill Covaleski, President and Brewmaster at Victory Brewing in Downingtown, PA.
