Desperate Times Call for Desperate Data Measures

We received the following note from our friends at DVRPC:

As many of you may have realized, access to data through the U.S. Census Bureau’s web site is not available during the current government shutdown. As an FYI, DVRPC has downloaded much of the 2006-2010 and 2007-2011 American Community Survey data for our nine-county region and for the entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, searchable at the links below.

ACS 2007-2011, nine-county region: http://www.dvrpc.org/asp/ACS2011/default.aspx

ACS 2006-2010, nine-county DVRPC region: http://www.dvrpc.org/asp/ACS2010/default.aspx

ACS 2006-2010, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania: http://www.dvrpc.org/asp/acs2010pa/default.aspx

Have You Used www.acsdatausers.org Yet?

If you use American Community Survey (ACS) data in your day-to-day planning work, you might be interested in a new website that was created through a partnership between the U.S. Census Bureau, the Population Reference Bureau (PRB) and Sabre Systems: http://www.acsdatausers.org/. The website is a new American Community Survey Data Users Group. The purpose of the ACS Data Users Group is to improve understanding of the value and utility of ACS data and to promote information sharing among data users about key ACS data issues and applications.

Membership in the group is free and open to all interested ACS data users. The group is led by a Steering Committee comprised of selected external stakeholders representing a broad spectrum of data users with different interests. To facilitate communication among ACS data users, PRB and Sabre Systems will maintain an online community forum, organize webinars and special sessions at professional meetings, and hold an annual ACS Data Users Conference.

Looking for Mentors for Planning Students

For the sixth year, the American Planning Association of Southeast Pennsylvania (APAPA-SE) is launching a mentor program for professionals in the planning field and local city planning graduate students. The program will include students from the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University. This program has helped students learn about the array of planning jobs, day to day work responsibilities, and advice for navigating the job search.

If you are interested in signing up to be a mentor, please fill out this form and email your resume to planningmentorpa@gmail.com by Sunday, September 22.

Mentors agree to be available 2-3 times throughout the year to meet with students on an informal basis and will have the opportunity to meet with mentees at events sponsored by the APAPASE. You do not have to be a member of APAPASE to be a mentor in the program and the specifics of meetings with your mentee are up to you.

Please contact Tali Cantor or Jeannette Brugger at planningmentorpa@gmail.com with any questions.
