Design on the Delaware Proposal Deadline Extended to May 2

Share your expertise, experience, and leadership in the design and building industry by presenting a program or tour at the 12th Annual Design on the Delaware Conference in Philadelphia.

AIA Philadelphia is accepting program proposals for the 2014 Design on the Delaware conference taking place November 12 -14, 2014, at the Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown Hotel and Center for Architecture. This multi-disciplinary conference for architects, planners, landscape architects, engineers, and other design and building professionals features four keynotes speakers, 36 professional education programs, three days of tours and a full day design charrette.

Deadline for proposals has been extended to Friday, May 2.  Submissions must meet the guidelines as outlined in the Call for Programs. To download the Call for Programs, visit www.designonthedelaware.com.

Submit Nominations for Great Places

The Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA-PA) is kicking off the “Great Places in Pennsylvania” Program. Great Places are unique, memorable places where people want to be – not only to visit, but to live and work every day. They serve as a model that other communities want to emulate – places of exemplary character, quality planning, identity, cultural interest and community involvement with a sustainable vision for the future.

For this first year, the nomination categories are Great Neighborhoods and Great Public Places. Specific criteria have been developed for each category. The Great Neighborhoods criteria relate to form & function, character & identity, and environmental & economic challenges. Criteria for Great Public Spaces relate to form & function, unique characteristics, and social interaction.

April 25: Volunteer at Temple EarthFest

Every year, Temple holds an Earth Day celebration called Earthfest.  Over 10,000 students and adults attend.  The Southeast Section staffs a booth on planning and the chapter.  We typically use historic aerials to discuss land use changes over time and how to plan for them.  The students (not all of them of course) typically react well to the aerials, trying to identify uses and answering questions on what they would do to plan.  (We usually are involved with a treasure hunt stamp and usually have candy, both of which add to the demand at our booth.)

The event will be held Friday April 25 at the Temple Ambler campus from 9:30 AM to 2 PM, although we need to get there earlier, probably around 8:30.  The event is lots of fun.  We need volunteers, preferably two people at a time for two hour shifts.  If you’re interested, please contact John Federico at jefederico@urbanengineers.com.

May 13: Andrew Howard of Team Better Block in Allentown

As part of the 2014 Spring Planning Forums – Making It Great Now, Andrew Howard, AICP of Team Better Block, a leading expert in placemaking and transportation, will be keynoting a day of sessions focused on revitalization and engaging communities in their future.  Andrew and additional sessions throughout the day will address strategies and methods that can be rapidly deployed, quickly implemented and readily realized to advance local community engagement and revitalization objectives. The forum will focus on the how-to and hands-on of creative asset mobilization, organizational structure, community capacity building, institutional support and civic engagement.  The local option is May 13, 2014 in Allentown.  5.25 CMs are pending approval for the event, including 1.5 ethics credits.
