Nov. 5: Health Equity and Planning Ethics (1.5 CM Ethics)
Equity and ethics are not identical, but they do intersect. Listen as AICP planners and allied health professionals probe this important topic. How is health equity being addressed, and how does it relate to planning? What ethical codes do public health professionals follow, and where’s the intersection with planning ethics? Examine the role equity plays in various ethical frameworks and find out how communities and planners are taking on health equity.
This event offers 1.5 AICP CM Ethics credits.

The Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning is holding its annual conference in Philadelphia October 30 – November 2 at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel. Today’s planning researchers and practitioners grapple with “big ideas”. From big data to fundamental restructuring of the world’s economy to climate change, the challenges of planning have changed dramatically. These challenges are daunting but they provide unprecedented opportunities for planning to have global impacts like never before. With these big challenges in mind, the Philadelphia ACSP conference aims to provide opportunities to address the big issues of today and tomorrow. Many of the sessions are approved for CM credits.

Today! The Future of Transportation in Pennsylvania and Beyond
More so than most states, Pennsylvania is at a turning point as it confronts its transportation future. Much of the state’s diverse transportation infrastructure needs upgrading or replacement, at the same time that new technologies are coming down the pike which are changing the way we think about transportation. In Pennsylvania, as in other states, voters are looking to Congress to take the lead in identifying priorities and providing funding, but Congress has again kicked the can down the road.
Please join us on Monday, October 6th at 6 pm in Meyerson B-3 for a facilitated discussion between Rina Cutler, Al Biehler, and Professor Megan Ryerson about “The Future of Transportation in Pennsylvania and Beyond.” This is an all-star cast.
Dec. 1-4: Economic Development Course in Lancaster
For anyone looking to strengthen their economic development skills, this intensive four day course, administered by Penn State Harrisburg, is accredited by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). The IEDC is the nation’s largest membership organization for economic developers. For those seeking national certification, the Economic Development Course is the first requirement in the process towards receiving certification as an economic developer (CEcD).
Oct. 29: A New Look at Reviewing Subdivision and Development Plans
On October 29th, the PA Local Government Training Partnership is coming to the Radnor Township Building in Wayne, Delaware County for a day-long focus on subdivision and development plan reviews. This course is designed for local officials, staff, and consultants involved in the front lines of reviewing subdivision and development plans. The local development review process prescribed by the Pennsylvania Municipalities Planning Code can be complex. In addition there are related approvals following different timelines for state and federal permits. The process can frustrate local officials, developers, and the public. It can lead to community controversy and ill feelings when not handled well. The course will examine the local government development review process – steps, timelines, and the roles of various officials and bodies doing the review. Information presented will be useful for both newcomers to the process and as a refresher for experienced officials and professionals. There will be hands-on exercises reviewing actual development plans. Instructors Denny Puko of DCED and John Trant, Jr., AICP of HRG will provide a new look at ways to improve the process and make it a win-win for the community and developers in achieving sound, quality development.

Oct. 14: Philadelphia Planning Gets the Archival Film Treatment
GeoPhilly, Philadelphia’s meetup group for map enthusiasts, is pleased to present After Hours for Planners with Archival Planning Films. This free event is held on the last day of the America Planning Association, Pennsylvania Chapter Annual Conference and features archival films from the 1950s-1960s about city planning and Philadelphia. A meet and greet with local urban planners and GeoPhilly members will follow the film screening at The Institute Bar.
These archival films are a time capsule of mid-century Philadelphia life and historical planning practices. The films feature a variety of planning recommendations which are at times archaic and at others times innovative and progressive. We hope you will find these films as charming, entertaining and fun as we do!
To travel from the conference, take the Market/Frankford line westbound from 2nd and Market to 11th and Market.
