Nominate Great Places In Pennsylvania

The PA Chapter of the American Planning Association recently kicked-off its 2017 Great Places in Pennsylvania Program. Great Places are unique, memorable places where people want to be – not only to visit, but to live, work and/or play every day. They serve as a model that other communities want to emulate – places of exemplary character, quality planning, identity, cultural interest and community involvement with a sustainable vision for the future.

Nominations are now open and seeking the nomination of Great Public Spaces and Great Streets. If you know a special public space or street that truly stands out in what it offers residents and visitors, NOMINATE IT!!!!

You can view the Program Guidelines, Category Criteria and Nomination Form on the APA PA website. The program flyer also contains links to the Program materials and the Nomination Form. The deadline for Nominations is April 18, 2017.

The program has two concentration tracks in Sustainable Community Planning and Transportation Planning. At the Meet and Greet with MS CTRP alumni, you’ll have a chance to learn about the various career paths alumni have taken from traditional government planning to community-based programming and policy development with nonprofit organizations, from government innovation to entrepreneurial startups, and more.

APAPA-SE, DVRPC and PennDOT Connect on Transportation

On Thursday, February 23, 2017, APAPASE and the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) co-hosted a breakfast event about PennDOT Connects. The event, which took place at the American College of Physicians building in Philadelphia, featured Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Secretary Leslie Richards, Brian Hare of PennDOT, and Elizabeth Schoonmaker of DVRPC, presentations are available here. Secretary Richards kicked off the event with a twenty-minute presentation where she explained transportation’s role in connecting communities and supporting economic development. Under the PennDOT Connects initiative, PennDOT will take an earlier and more active role in reaching out to communities to enhance engagement with local communities and improve transportation-project planning, design, and delivery so that transportation investments support a community’s vision and goals.

Become an Instructor on Zoning Practice

PMPEI is Looking for People Who Want to Teach Zoning Classes. A “Train-the-Trainer” class is scheduled for new instructors who want to teach the PMPEI

Course in Zoning. Train-the-Trainer prepares instructors to teach courses by equipping them with an in-depth knowledge of course content to ensure it will be taught consistently throughout the Commonwealth. Principles of adult education, program procedures, and presentation delivery are also part of the training.

Citizen and professional planners and allied professionals with a minimum of five years’ experience in planning and zoning in PA are eligible to become PMPEI Certified Instructors. If you are committed to planning education and would like to become a Certified Instructor the deadline for applying for The Course in Zoning training is May 5, 2017.

DVRPC’s roundtable series highlights challenges older suburbs and downtowns are facing. The Strategies for Older Suburbs Roundtable Series provides a means for networking and exchanging ideas with similar organizations facing the same concerns. Join us for a workshop with David Milder, DANTH, Inc., who is nationally recognized for his expertise on the new normal for downtowns, the deliberate consumer, multichannel retailing and niche revitalization strategies. The workshop will feature presentations, a question and answer session as well as one-on-one discussions. This event is approved for 2.5 AICP CM credits.

APAPA-SE to Match Donations in Memory of Matt Honea

Matt Honea received his Masters in City & Regional Planning from University of Pennsylvania. He applied these skills to his passion of helping make his community better, including the Make the World Better Foundation (MTWB).

In his memory, the American Planning Association Pennsylvania Chapter Southeast Section (APAPASE) is offering to match any donations to the Matt Honea Memorial Fund, up to $500 before March 1^st. The Matt Honea Memorial Fund is part of the Make The World Better Foundation who work to rebuild parks in Philadelphia. The fund is to honor Matt’s legacy at Ralph Brooks Park, a park he truly loved.

When donating, please make sure you include “APAPASE” in the comments, so it is earmarked for the match.
