June 26 – The Divided City Book Event with Alan Mallach and Jake Blumgart

The Divided City Book Event with Alan Mallach and Jake Blumgart

Join PACDC and WHYY’s PlanPhilly on the evening of Tuesday, June 26th for a conversation between Alan Mallach, the author of the new book The Divided City, and Jake Blumgart of PlanPhilly, on how cities like Philadelphia can and must chart a path forward toward inclusion and opportunity.

Tickets are available for free, but you must RSVP here in advance.

When? Tuesday, June 26th from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.
Where? Pipeline Philly, The Graham Building at Dilworth Park, 30 South 15th Street, 15th Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19102

This book event, co-sponsored by WHYY’s PlanPhilly and the Philadelphia Association of Community Development Corporations (PACDC), opens PACDC’s Forward Equitable Development Conference to be held the following day, Wednesday, June 27th.

About The Divided City
In The Divided City, Mallach tells the real story of both the revival and the growing inequality in America’s older industrial cities, and examines whether, as they continue to grow, they can again become the places of hope and opportunity they once were.  Combining big-picture analysis and research with the nitty-gritty reality of these cities drawn from author’s years of working in and studying them, Alan Mallach—a leading authority on economics and urban revitalization—offers an essential contribution to our understanding of American cities like Philadelphia.

Mallach looks practically at how we can make inclusion and opportunity a reality, and makes concrete recommendations in The Divided City on topics ranging from job creation and education to affordable housing and improving the quality of life in high-poverty areas.

Copies of The Divided City will be available for purchase at the event from Uncle Bobbie’s Coffee and Books, a locally owned, independent bookstore in Germantown. You can learn more about the book from Island Press here.

Special thanks to Pipeline Philly for hosting the event.

“Embracing Change: Empowering Your Community’s Revitalization Effort”
Pennsylvania’s Premier Revitalization Conference

Location:  Chester County Historical Society and Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center, Downtown West Chester, PA

Dates:  June 3rd through 6th, 2018

Opening Keynote Speaker:  David Greene, host of NPR’s Morning Edition

As Pennsylvania’s program coordinator for the National Main Street Center, a subsidiary of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Pennsylvania Downtown Center will host its annual statewide conference June 3-6, 2018, in West Chester, PA, with the theme – Embracing Change – Empowering the Future of Your Community’s Revitalization Effort

We anticipate 250 or so attendees not only from Pennsylvania but also from neighboring states of Delaware, New Jersey and even parts of Maryland who represent downtown organizations, municipalities, heritage groups, preservation advocates and other community revitalization professionals.

Throughout the four days we’ll hear from state and national leaders and we’ll discuss new partnerships for creating more entrepreneurial and equitable communities with a focus on innovation, technology, diversity in all its forms and constantly evolving life style preferences. We’ll explore how we shop, how we play, how we engage in our communities and how we interact as a society.

Our concurrent sessions will take place mostly at Uptown! Knauer Theatre and our meals, plenary, and exhibitors will be at the Chester County Historical Society. Mobile tours are also on the schedule both in West Chester, neighboring Kennett Square, and Phoenixville.  We are pleased that our annual awards gala, the Townies, will be in Sykes Hall at West Chester University on Tuesday evening, June 5th.

2018 Great Places in Pennsylvania Nominations Open

The PA Chapter of the American Planning Association recently kicked-off its 2018 Great Places in Pennsylvania Program.  Great Places are unique, memorable places where people want to be – not only to visit, but to live, work and/or play every day.  They serve as a model that other communities want to emulate – places of exemplary character, quality planning, identity, cultural interest and community involvement with a sustainable vision for the future.

Nominations are now open and we’re seeking the nomination of Great Public Spaces and Great Greenways/Trails. If you know a special public space or greenway/trail that truly stands out in what it offers residents and visitors, NOMINATE IT!!!!  A Great Place in your community demonstrates the importance of planning, provides an opportunity for promotion and tourism, and illustrates how local policies and projects strengthen our communities.

You can view the Program Guidelines, Category Criteria and Nomination Form on the APA PA website. The Great Places in PA 2018 Program Announcement Flyer also contains links to the Program materials and the Nomination Form. The deadline for Nominations is April 17, 2018.

April 14: TransportationCamp PHL 2018

Young Professionals in Transportation (YPT), WTS, and Drexel’s Lindy Institute are co-hosting TransportationCamp PHL 2018 on April 14. Registration is open at http://transportationcamp.org/events/phl2018/.

TransportationCamp is positioned as “where technology meets transportation.” Transportation of people and products is an issue of increasing importance with direct impacts on economic strength, environmental sustainability, and social equity. Advances in technology such as mobile computing, open source software and APIs, spatial analysis and others presents an opportunity to improve mobility more immediately and at a lower cost than has been possible in the past. TransportationCamp builds connections between disparate innovators in diverse fields including public administration, transportation operations, transportation planning, information design and software engineering.

The inaugural Philadelphia incarnation of the participant-driven TransportationCamp conference series follows an “unconference” format, lending itself to a more pertinent, thought-provoking, and active event. This link shows what exactly an “unconference” is: http://transportationcamp.org/2011/02/how-transportationcamp-works-the-essential-guide/
