Pennsylvania Humanities Council and Orton Family Foundation staff and their partners will present “Community Heart & Soul: Engaging Residents through the Humanities to Find What Matters Most” at the Annual Conference of the PA Chapter of the American Planning Association later this month.

Can’t make the conference session? This webinar will recap it!

Styled as a digital workshop, the webinar will explore why the humanities are relevant to planning and outline major components of the Community Heart & Soul® model. You’ll hear success stories from Pennsylvania Heart & Soul™ projects in Carlisle, Williamsport, and Meadville and take part in exercises that illustrate Heart & Soul in action.

Those who participate in either the October 24 conference session OR the November 6 webinar will be eligible to apply for the next round of Pennsylvania Heart & Soul planning grants.

The first segment of a four-part video series on planning in Chester County has been released. This series hopes to engage you in the preparation of Landscapes3, the county’s next comprehensive plan.

You’re invited to FitCityPHL 3!

FitCityPHL is an annual full-day symposium that explores design strategies in workplaces, neighborhoods, and cities that improve health. It brings together individuals representing the sectors of public health, architecture, planning, design, landscape architecture, development,  research and evaluation, academia, philanthropy, and government to learn about how the built environment can have a positive impact on the negative health trends currently facing communities – particularly obesity and other chronic conditions.

At this year’s symposium, attendees will interact with public sector leaders in a town hall format, learn about community engagement and workplace active design strategies, and participate in several walking tours highlighting local examples of active design.

Drexel Announces Urban Innovation Fellowships

The Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation at Drexel University invites you to apply for one of three [3] Urban Innovation Fellowships through this brief application form. Lindy is looking for Philadelphians who are working on urban challenges at any scale – from the block to the neighborhood to the city – who would benefit from the support and the expertise of the Lindy Institute, its faculty fellows, and staff.

Fellows receive the following benefits:

  • Being paired with experts who will help them think through strategies in real time during an Urban Innovation workshop from October 30 – November 1 (selected applicants should be available to participate in this event). The workshop will include site visits, work sessions and public presentations over the 3 days.
  • A $15,000 award to continue to work on their project at Drexel. Fellows will receive guidance from the Lindy Institute to help determine the best use of the stipend, but they will have latitude to decide whether it be used as income or funding for implementation.
  • Access to Drexel’s academic research facilities and maker spaces
  • A comprehensive plan to take your project into its next phase

Are you a planning student or recent graduate? APA has a new opportunity for you!

If you are in or have recently graduated from a program accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board (PAB), you can join the AICP Candidate Pilot Program, starting in November 2017.

The new AICP Candidate Pilot Program provides a path to start the process to earn the prestigious AICP Certification earlier. Join the program and sit for the AICP Certification Exam after you graduate, when you’re still in the test-taking mindset.

The criteria to become AICP remain the same, but the order of the steps changes.

Teach Green Values: Become a Keep Philadelphia Beautiful Ambassador

Keep Philadelphia Beautiful (KPB) is looking for passionate volunteers to serve as sustainability ambassadors at School District of Philadelphia schools. Sustainability ambassadors will be responsible for leading presentations on neighborhood beautification measures, such as recycling and composting.

KPB provides in-person training and presentation materials to ambassadors prior to engagement activities. The presentations have been developed with the Philadelphia Streets Department and the School District of Philadelphia through the District’s GreenFutures initiative (GreenFutures). A commitment of 2, 1-hour presentations per semester is required, and volunteers will be assigned to schools that have expressed interest in the program.

Professional planners from Chester County are invited to attend the fall 2017 Chester County Planners’ Forum from 8 a.m.-10 a.m. Oct. 5 at the East Whiteland Township Building, 209 Conestoga Road in Frazer, Pa. At the event, Chester County Planning Commission staff will provide an update on Landscapes3, the county’s next long-range plan, and the Chester Valley Trail Extension to Downingtown. There also will be presentations from guest speakers about development trends in Great Valley, an economic development plan for the Kennett area, and riparian buffer ordinances. RFP: FDR Park Master Plan

Fairmount Park Conservancy working with Philadelphia Parks & Recreation seeks proposals from qualified and creative design teams to perform a master plan for the 348-acre Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) Park in South Philadelphia. The master plan will investigate, analyze and recommend approaches to enhance FDR’s ecology, landscape and built environments. The master plan will also seek to create a shared vision for reinvestment among park managers, adjacent institutions, stewards, non-profits and general park users.
