Let’s celebrate Pride within the planning, landscape architecture, and architecture professions in Philadelphia!
Join us on Thursday, June 6th at 6:00p at Cockatoo for our third annual Pride happy hour, an event for LGBTQ+ landscape architects, architects, planners, and allied professionals in the Philadelphia region. Let’s start conversations, build community, and celebrate Pride within our fields!
The event is free and open to LGBTQ+ individuals and allies that work in the built environment (bring your friends and colleagues)! Attendees will receive a free drink ticket. The event is 21+ and is sponsored by OLIN, WRT, Land Collective, ASLA PA-DE, APA PA-SE, and AIA Philadelphia.

Webinar Wednesday: The Impact of Large & Medium Scale Solar Projects

The Impact of Large & Medium Scale Solar Projects on PA Communities
The webinar will provide a comprehensive discussion of large and medium scale solar developments on the PA landscape including where and why they are being sited, common concerns in communities, zoning and land use considerations in ordinance development and proposed legislation that could impact solar in PA.
The webinar will discuss:
- Solar terminology including the differences and demands of large, medium and small-scale operations.
- The physical impact of grid scale solar deployment.
- Land Use implications including agricultural and open land issues, siting considerations and environmental impacts.
- Economic impact of solar development.
- Ordinance considerations including glare, noise, screening and decommissioning.
- Proposed legislation.
- What is the role of the planner in this process.
The webinar will be presented by Extension Educators, who closely follow developments with PJM (a regional transmission organization that coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity) and PUC (Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission) along with proposed legislation and policy changes as well as explain what is happening in the Commonwealth and why. In addition, a perspective from a county planning department will be shared regarding local land use controls for solar facilities.
CM credit is pending approval. You must attend the webinar live in order to earn CM credit.

Broadband Ready Community Program
The Broadband Ready Community Program developed by the PA Broadband Development Authority (PBDA) targets PA municipalities and counties to reduce procedural, policy, and permitting barriers to broadband deployment at the municipal level and to encourage broadband infrastructure investment within participating communities. The program encourages and promotes public-private partnerships through stakeholder engagement and promotion of a participating municipality as a Broadband Ready Community to signal that it has improved broadband infrastructure implementation efficiency. PBDA staff will be discussing how planners in PA can maximize the program’s value for participating communities.

2024 Mentor Mixer Recap!
APAPASE held a successful student-mentor mixer event at the University of Pennsylvania on April 11, 2024.
Twenty-five attendees from professional backgrounds and the three Philadelphia-area planning schools – UPenn, Temple, and Westchester – met to share stories and career advice. Conversations went deep into the evening over sandwiches and drinks, and both sets of attendees felt that the information exchange was valuable.

Nominations Open for Great Places in PA 2024!
Submission Deadline May 17th
Great Places in Pennsylvania
The Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Planning Association is looking for Great Places in two categories: Great Public Spaces and Great Transformations. Great Places are unique, memorable places that display community planning best practices, have an exemplary character, and a sustainable vision for tomorrow.
We want to hear your suggestions for a Great Public Space or Great Transformation designation. Please complete the online submission form by Friday, May 17, 2024. Nominations will be considered by the Great Places in Pennsylvania Judges Committee with notification to applicants in the summer.

All Great Public Spaces and Transformation nominations must be submitted online. All information is to be entered on or uploaded to the website.

Learning & Practicing Effective Public Speaking
(For All Ages and Backgrounds)
Please join the Philadelphia YMF for a presentation on “Public Speaking: Projecting Your Authentic Voice” by Matt Reese. There is no “one way” of public speaking. This presentation will cover multiple techniques for public speaking and guide attendees to find their own public speaking voice and style. The presentation will be for both virtual and in-person attendees. Following the presentation, there will be in-person hands on activities focused on public speaking. Attendees should prepare a 2-minute elevator pitch on themselves or a topic of their choice. Appetizers and refreshments will be provided. Virtual links will be provided prior to the event.
