Director of Garden Programs

The Director of Garden Programs leads PHS’s thinking and action in supporting a thriving and growing network of community and school gardens and gardeners. To accomplish this, the Director leads the Gardens team to provide core support services to the existing network of gardens and envision, develop, and deliver innovative community and school garden projects.  The Director of Garden Programs also represents PHS in the urban agriculture community locally and nationally.  Key day-to-day responsibilities for this position include creating project proposals and budgets, working with the Development team to raise funds for existing and new activities, leading the Gardens team to deliver projects, and managing relationships with stakeholders and partners involved in PHS’s community and school gardening work.  In all this work, the Director collaborates actively with the Chief of Programs, the President, and colleagues across the organization while sustaining excellence in program delivery.

Important Annual Deliverables:

  • Annual program of work for the Gardens Team that outlines activities to deliver in the year, change priorities, activities to end, and new activities to develop during the year.
  • Annual budget for the work of the Gardens Team and interim forecasts.
  • Revenue to support all activities of the team and a contribution towards PHS’s indirect expenses. Revenue is generated in partnership with the Development and Marketing teams.
  • Completion of all grant and contract deliverables for activities during the year.

Essential Functions:

  • Establishes a clear vision, strategy, and annual program of work for PHS’s activities in community and school gardening in Philadelphia and beyond.  This should consider the overall needs of the sector and define a clear, appropriate role for PHS in advancing community and school gardening.
  • Collaborates with Development, Marketing, and the Chief of Programs to identify, cultivate, secure, and deliver on funding from foundations, government agencies, fee for service partners, and individuals to support garden programs.  The Director will be responsible for ensuring healthy, growing relationships with some funders.
  • Ensures projects are delivered with excellence and within cost and timeline budgets, including managing stakeholder relationships, permitting, contracts, reporting, and coordinating with project team to meet deliverables.
  • Manages the finances of the department including the development and monitoring of project plans and budgets.
  • Hires, manages, and develops a multi-disciplinary team, ensuring that team members set and achieve professional development goals, monitoring performance of team and taking disciplinary action as needed.
  • Serves as a leader in PHS’s programs management team to promote and ensure successful implementation of the various initiatives of the department and cross-collaboration across the organization.
  • Provides leadership in building or supporting community advocacy networks related to gardens and open spaces, understanding the value of advocacy and the work of building advocacy networks.
  • Participates in PHS events throughout the year including the Philadelphia Flower Show.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related fields required
  • 5 years of program management experience with a focus in urban agriculture/gardening
  • Track record for successful fundraising
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully direct and manage a multidisciplinary team and work collaboratively across diverse organizations and disciplines, both internally and externally
  • Demonstrated ability to build superior relationships with people with diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, on budget, while adhering to deadlines
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Experience with organizational development and community building
  • Strong facilitation and collaboration skills
  • Experience with program evaluation and data management
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience in community-based urban greening initiatives
  • Familiarity with the Philadelphia region a plus
  • Valid driver’s license and a clean, safe driving record
  • Flexible schedule and ability to work some nights and weekends

DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR DUTIES: Prepare various types of reports including graphic, statistical, maps representing existing and proposed land use and other data for written presentations.    Compile information to be used in planning studies of physical development, economic growth, or recreational needs of the community, or of other programs involving the application of general planning principles. Assist in the preparation of clear, sound, accurate and informative statistical and other planning reports, studies and surveys containing findings, conclusions and recommendations.

 

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

EDUCATION : Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree including or supplemented by 21 semester hour credits in professional planning subjects such as the principles of land use planning, history of city planning, planning project design, and planning law and administration

 

EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of experience in municipal, county, regional, or state planning.

 

NOTE: Possession of a current and valid license as a professional planner in New Jersey issued by the New Jersey Board of Professional Planners, though not required, is preferred, and may be substituted for the educational requirement.

 

NOTE: Possession of a Master’s degree in Planning from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one (1) year of indicated experience.

 

SPECIAL NOTE: Consideration will be given to a candidate that possesses a Master’s degree in Planning from an accredited college or university and has more than two years of experience in municipal, county, regional, or state planning.

 

LICENSE: Appointees will be required to possess a valid driver’s license only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
