Data and GIS Intern

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) connects people with horticulture and together we create beautiful, healthy and sustainable communities. PHS uses data and maps to support and showcase the work of our community gardening and public greening programs.  We are currently working on a number of projects to streamline our data management, prioritize planning for our public greening projects, and create maps that illustrate the impact of our work in the region.  PHS is seeking a remarkably detail oriented and efficient individual to assist with ad hoc projects focused on cleaning and updating data in Excel, creating maps and similar projects as needed.  Primary assignments will be data entry, mapping location data, and creating maps using ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online and Adobe Illustrator.  Dependent on time and ability, there could be opportunities to assist with conceptualizing future GIS projects.

This is a paid 2-3 month, 10-15 hour/week position with a flexible schedule, ideal for a student or recent graduate.

Start date:  Flexible, ideally the week of 12/4/2017, Office closed December 25-29

Education, Experience, and Skills Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or student currently completing a degree in Geography, Spatial Analysis, Urban Planning, Information Technology or similar
  • Strong working knowledge of ESRI’s ArcGIS platform, specifically ArcMap and ArcGIS Online
  • Strong skills manipulating data in Excel
  • Strong data entry skills, efficient and accurate
  • Experience in Access or other databases a plus
  • Adobe Illustrator knowledge a plus
  • Must be committed to the mission of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.
