June 26 – Montgomery County’s Proposed Complete Streets Policy: An Informational Overview

Montgomery County’s Proposed Complete Streets Policy: An Informational Overview

DATE: Wednesday, June 26, 2019

TIME: 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

The Montgomery County Planning Commission (MCPC) and the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) will be offering a free webinar to introduce interested municipal officials, design professionals, and citizens to Montgomery County’s proposed Complete Streets policy initiative and to discuss how it may affect local roadway design in communities. MCPC, working with a host of public, non-profit, and industry leaders, is developing a Complete Streets policy for county-owned roads, bridges, and facilities. The policy—one of the first of its kind for a county government in Pennsylvania—will direct the county to incorporate Complete Streets principles into its own projects as well as advocate for them when working with partner agencies on their projects, whether public or private.

Complete Streets are streets designed for everyone. They take into account all ages of abilities and provide safe use for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and transit riders. The webinar will focus on the elements that will be included in the policy and how the policy will benefit communities. Join us for this interesting topic! An opportunity to comment on the draft policy will be available following the webinar at www.montcopa.org/CompleteStreetsPolicy.

WEBINAR: Creating Safe Environments – Integrating Planning, Design & Physical Security

Friday, July 12 2019
1:00 PM – 2:30 PM EDT
Hosted by: APA Pennsylvania
1.5 CMs Approved
In an increasingly complex world, creating safe environments requires planning with intention, nuance, and a multi-disciplinary approach. Physical security is most seamless when integrated into built environments long before they are constructed, but elements can also be effectively integrated into existing spaces. Learn about risk assessment, varied strategies, multi-disciplinary designs, and effective questions to ask to ensure that places and spaces are beautiful and functional–but also inherently secure. Case studies will be discussed to assist in framing a typical and holistic planning process. Effective approaches will be shared from the perspective of a professional planner and urban designer, as well as a physical security specialist.

March 19: Preservation for Planners Workshop (CM Credits)

Older and historic places are an integral part of the identities, cultures, and economies in Pennsylvania’s diverse communities. These places where we live, work, and play can often mean different things to different people, which provides both opportunities and challenges as communities grow and change.

How can planners help their communities and clients identify, protect, and enhance these places? This one-day workshop, sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office (PA SHPO) and Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC), will familiarize county, municipal, and consulting planners with core historic preservation programs and concepts and help participants understand how to effectively integrate these ideas into planning processes, documents, and practice.

Agenda includes:

  • Integrating historic preservation into planning;
  • Key players, policies, and programs;
  • Identifying and designating historic resources;
  • Protecting and regulating historic resources; and
  • Incentives and tools for historic preservation.

Five hours of AICP Certification Maintenance (CM) credits available.

Registration is required by Friday, March 8 . The $40 registration fee includes the one-day workshop, lunch, and break refreshments. Doors open at 8:30 AM and the workshop begins at 9:00 and runs through 3:15 PM.

About the Workshop

Historically, people from underrepresented groups have encountered ongoing experiences of oppression throughout their lifetimes. These experiences have impacted their mental health and the social conditions in which they live. The first workshop has three major objectives:

  • Participants will gain an understanding of the historical and political underpinnings of racism and classism and how these ideals continue to impact communities today;
  • The facilitator will introduce the concept of racial trauma and explore the impact of racial trauma on individuals and communities in which we work; and
  • Participants will be given strategies to learn how to effectively communicate with those who have been traumatized.

The facilitator will use case examples, small group discussions, and role-plays to engage participants throughout the workshop. The overarching goal will be to provide a historical context to facilitate understanding and inform effective communication and interactions.

Speakers: Kim Lundgren, ENV SP and Sarah Marchant, AICP

Description: Local governments face increasing pressure to transition to a more citizen-centric form of service delivery that is transparent, holds the government accountable, and provides an easy pathway for community members to be involved in decision-making. In many ways, this is a shift towards a more sustainable community. But for many local government leaders, limited staff and budgets make it difficult to even think about, let alone take action towards, incorporating “new” tasks into the daily staff routine to create a more sustainable community. Examine current trends in indicators, transparency, and smart cities, as well as a specific case study from Nashua, N.H., that shows how to develop and tell a community’s sustainability story based on available data. The City of Nashua had neither a sustainability director nor a sustainability plan when it employed a sustainability dashboard to share the data that framed its sustainability profile and engage community members in the effort to improve that data.

August 17th

Sustainable Transportation – What is it? With Examples from a Sustainability Icon, Norway!

Speakers: Ed McCormack, PhD and Ryan Avery, PhD

Description: As urban populations have grown, the need for sustainable transportation systems is increasingly crucial. Communities must now account for a range of complex factors in their transportation and land-use planning, including mass transit, economic development, livable communities, population density, climate change, alternative energies and more. This webinar explores the concepts behind sustainable transportation and provides an overview of successfully applying sustainable transportation principles in Norway. The webinar also covers a program at the University of Washington designed to train planners and engineers to bring a sustainability perspective to all aspects of transportation systems policy and planning.
