Government programs to save small business are rolling out weekly. They are a big and blunt instrument that is slow moving and wide. But they are not reaching the targeted needs of the small businesses in our communities. And they are not being deployed in a way to ensure inclusive access to save our small businesses.

Ilana Preuss, founder and CEO of Recast City, leads a discussion on concrete steps we can take to ensure inclusive access for small businesses, a framework that can help us look at this issue, programs already being adopted by local governments that are targeted to under-represented populations in business owners, and models from non-profits, CDFIs, major corporations, and philanthropy to ensure an inclusive recovery from this economic crisis.

Montgomery County’s Proposed Complete Streets Policy: An Informational Overview

The Montgomery County Planning Commission (MCPC) and the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) will be offering a free webinar to introduce interested municipal officials, design professionals, and citizens to Montgomery County’s proposed Complete Streets policy initiative and to discuss how it may affect local roadway design in communities. MCPC, working with a host of public, non-profit, and industry leaders, is developing a Complete Streets policy for county-owned roads, bridges, and facilities. The policy—one of the first of its kind for a county government in Pennsylvania—will direct the county to incorporate Complete Streets principles into its own projects as well as advocate for them when working with partner agencies on their projects, whether public or private.

Complete Streets are streets designed for everyone. They take into account all ages of abilities and provide safe use for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and transit riders. The webinar will focus on the elements that will be included in the policy and how the policy will benefit communities. Join us for this interesting topic! In an increasingly complex world, creating safe environments requires planning with intention, nuance, and a multi-disciplinary approach. Physical security is most seamless when integrated into built environments long before they are constructed, but elements can also be effectively integrated into existing spaces. Learn about risk assessment, varied strategies, multi-disciplinary designs, and effective questions to ask to ensure that places and spaces are beautiful and functional–but also inherently secure. Case studies will be discussed to assist in framing a typical and holistic planning process. Effective approaches will be shared from the perspective of a professional planner and urban designer, as well as a physical security specialist.

The tour will include both walking and driving portions. You will hear about placemaking initiatives, adaptive reuse, new construction, community events, historic preservation projects, Opportunity Zones, and recent developments in these Classic Towns.

APA is considering updating the CM Credit process, with comments due by Friday, June 7. See the full details of the change at https://www.planning.org/cm/updates/.

Summary of Changes Under Consideration

The chart below summarizes the updates under consideration. If approved, the proposed timeline will allow for technology updates and offer sufficient advance notice to members and CM providers. The expected implementation date is January 1, 2021.

Mandatory Credit Topics Credits Required in a Two-Year Reporting Period Minimum Length of Sessions on Mandatory Topics
Ethics:

  • 1 CM credit on ethics
  • 1 CM credit on ethics related to equity
 2 One hour
Law 1 One hour
Targeted topic: A critical, urgent issue that is relevant to planners.
First targeted topic: Climate*
*Proposed		 1 One hour

If all four mandatory credit topics are approved, members would log each credit type separately, as they do now for law and ethics.
