Beat the Heat Hunting Park: A Community Heat Relief Plan

In Philadelphia, some neighborhoods can be 22 degrees F hotter than others and low-income residents and residents of color are more likely to live in these hotter neighborhoods. This pattern of unequal exposure to risk tells us that climate change is not only a public health issue but also an issue of racial equity. As climate projections show hotter days to come, it is important to support residents as they work to make their communities more sustainable. For this reason, the City launched Beat the Heat Hunting Park: A Community Heat Relief  Plan, which was created to identify cooling solutions through a collaboration between residents, community organizations, and the City, and is now being implemented. During this webinar, participants will learn how planning, development, and social structures inform climate risks, and the importance of equitable community collaboration when developing and implementing climate policy. CM credit is pending approval.

With the complexities and uncertainties revealed in the pandemic and unrest of 2020, planning effectively for the next decade means being more adaptable. In this webinar, there will be discussion of the  three approaches to urban planning:  prescriptive, proscriptive and adaptive. The adaptive approach is best suited for times of rapid change and uncertainty. He will talk about how planners and organizations that rely on prescriptive and proscriptive strategies can modify their practice to be more adaptive.

This interactive webinar, with some coaching thrown in, will help you and your organization be better prepared to do more collaborative, culturally competent and cost-effective planning.  There will be an open and supportive conversations to help you and your organizations achieve more, more effectively.

Planning and the New Dynamics of the Demographic of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Growth

The “Grandparents Raising Grandchildren” demographic is rapidly growing across Pennsylvania. Over 90,000 families have this situation. Millions of youngsters nationally are being raised this way. This panel will examine the role of the planner in working closely with this demographic and how the need exists to include this population in the development of the community. There are social, educational, health, legal and other consequences to take into account. This unique group requires special attention in a recreational and other planning elements as a growing part of school districts and other governmental components. A grandparent and legislative component are included in the panel. CM credit is pending approval.

As the primary interface for all PA SHPO programs, PA-SHARE will enable users to submit and track projects in real-time, receive confirmation of submissions and expedited communication, and access more than one million pages of information about historic properties and archaeological sites.

The State Board has approved offering the recent State conference virtually to members and non-members.  There is a fee and the conference can be viewed until May 31, 2021. CM credits can be earned for the sessions.  This is a great opportunity for those who could not attend but want the learning opportunity and CM credits.

Need CM Credits? Check out the first APA Pennsylvania Chapter Wednesday Webinar Session: “Micromobility Challenges:  Sometimes You Feel Like a Scooter and Sometimes You Don’t”

The Pennsylvania Chapter will be kicking off a webinar series as a way for Chapter members to earn additional CM credits and have access to programming on a variety of topic areas.

The first “Webinar Wednesday” event will take place on December 2, 2020 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. titled “Micromobility Challenges:  Sometimes You Feel Like a Scooter and Sometimes You Don’t;” presented by Roy Gothie, Statewide Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator with PennDOT.  Participants will evolve their understanding of current micromobility classifications, how that is applied to Pennsylvania’s existing vehicle code and the implications of these vehicles for equity, health, and safety.

CM Credits will be available, and the webinar is free for Chapter Members and $20.00 for non-members.
