Food Literacy VISTA

 

The Free Library of Philadelphia’s Culinary Literacy Center (CLC), in partnership with The Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger (GPCAH) and Greensgrow Farms, is seeking a dynamic AmeriCorps VISTA member to join our team in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

 

Since opening in June 2014, the Culinary Literacy Center has reached more than 7,000 participants.  The Center features a new demonstration kitchen created to provide culinary literacy classes for children, teens, families, and adults. Our mission is two-fold: Teaching literacy skills through cooking, and exploring culinary literacy. We support culinary literacy through nutrition education, understanding how cooking can support disease prevention and healthy lifestyles, and offering hands-on cooking classes and demonstrations. From the outset, the CLC has pursued community partnerships and has engaged more than 30 local organizations in its programs, from social services agencies, health initiatives, and ESL programs to churches, schools, and more.

 

The VISTA member will be part of the selective National Anti-Hunger and Opportunity Corps (AHOC).*  The Food Literacy and Access Vista will be 1 of 3 VISTA positions serving with Food Literacy Initiative Philadelphia (FLIP), a collaboration between the Free Library of Philadelphia’s Culinary Literacy Center (CLC), Greensgrow Farms and GPCAH.

 

Position Description:

The Food Literacy VISTA will work on the program design of Culinary Literacy and Nutrition Education programming as the Culinary Literacy Center expands into the Neighborhood Libraries. The VISTA will promote the programs both in the CLC and in the Neighborhood Libraries to increase attendance among SNAP recipients. Additionally, he or she will work on creating a Best Practices model for Culinary Literacy and Nutrition Education programs and will develop a sustainable assessment tool that can be used to evaluate Culinary Literacy Programming and the Food Literacy Initiative Philadelphia programs particularly their impact on low-income Philadelphians.

 

The VISTA will support the development of a training program to be offered to community members to train them as Community Food Educators. He or she will promote attendance at the training among past participants in Culinary Literacy programs, as well as community leaders and once completed, to return as volunteers to staff Nutrition Education classes at the Neighborhood Libraries. The VISTA will identify and assist in the application for funding sources that can be used to make this training available to community members at low to no cost.

 

The VISTA will work with VISTA members placed at FLIP partner locations as needed. The VISTA will provide potential SNAP recipients with referrals to the FLIP partners, GPCAH and Greensgrow Farms.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with community outreach, participatory education, teaching or training
  • Knowledge of or interest in nutrition principles and food insecurity
  • Familiarity with food resources such as SNAP, farmers’ markets, urban agriculture, pantries, summer meals
  • Access to a reliable car is helpful, otherwise comfort with public transportation
  • This position is ideal for individuals interested in careers in non-profit management, public health, community development, education, nutrition, public policy, and culinary arts.
  • Conversation Spanish is a plus.

 

Requirements

  • College degree

  • Ability to multi-task, and function independently or as part of a team
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Microsoft Excel

 

Time Commitment:

This is a one year, full-time position beginning with orientation in late June/early July 2016. You are expected to be available for the needs of your community and project at all times, including days, nights and weekends. An initiative of Hunger Free America since 2010, the national Anti-Hunger and Opportunity Corps Program (AHOC) is one of the largest anti-hunger AmeriCorps VISTA projects in the country. Its main focus is to fight hunger and improve nutrition, primarily by breaking down barriers to accessing the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as the Food Stamp Program) as well as by expanding economic opportunity and ensuring healthy futures for all Americans mostly through the SNAP Employment and Training program. Overview: Clean Air Council is a 501(c)(3), member-supported environmental health advocacy organization whose mission is to protect everyone’s right to breathe clean air.

The Council is headquartered in Philadelphia. For the position of Outreach Coordinator, the Council seeks a self-starting individual with vision, initiative and demonstrated commitment to environmental protection and sustainable transportation.

The Outreach Coordinator will work with the Council’s Transportation Team to promote sustainable transportation practices to the public. The Outreach Coordinator will craft and execute campaigns to achieve the Transportation Program goals. The Outreach Coordinator should be well versed in social media outreach and other types of marketing, as well as outreach efforts to an employer or group of employees. The applicant should have experience navigating organizations to target decision-makers and make contact with them. The ideal applicant will be enthusiastic, personable, and confident.

The goal of the campaigns is to change transportation behaviors from the single occupancy vehicle to carpools, public transportation, walking and biking, and multimodal trips. The campaigns will also focus on driving users to the regional trail system and other bicycle/walking infrastructure. The transportation team focuses on both commuting and recreation trips.

The coordinator is responsible for project management; outreach; administration; and fundraising. The specific projects the Coordinator will work on may vary, but will revolve around constituency outreach for multiuse trail projects and employer/employee outreach related to sustainable commuting.

General Description

The Transportation Coordinator will be responsible for implementing Clean Air Council’s outreach, advocacy, and educational work related to the Transportation Program. The Coordinator will mobilize public support for our campaigns and promote sustainable transportation solutions in the Philadelphia region. The Coordinator will work to build the capacity of the public and relevant stakeholders to meaningfully and fully participate in transportation issues.

Specific Responsibilities

The Coordinator’s project management responsibilities include: understanding project objectives and meeting program deliverables; understanding and meeting internal and grant related reporting requirements, deadlines, etc.; working with the Program Director in developing and implementing outreach campaigns.

The Coordinator’s outreach responsibilities include print and digital educational materials development; holding meetings with stakeholders and other program constituents to promote the Council’s Transportation Program; and broad education and outreach strategies, including at public events. Additional responsibilities may include communications work through the Council’s and the Transportation Program’s social media channels, as well as developing blog posts, LTEs, Op-eds, and other materials. The Coordinator may also be tasked with event planning and management for Transportation Program events.

The coordinator’s administrative requirements is to keep current on relevant transportation issues by participating in educational opportunities and maintaining personal professional networks; staying current with such requirements as time sheets; and participating in Council wide activities such as the 5k Run, Greenfest, weekly staff meetings, etc.

The Coordinator’s fundraising requirements include working with Program Director and Grant Writer on helping retain current funding by meeting grant deliverables; helping with reporting requirements; helping identify new funding streams; participating in project and budget planning and development; and participating in grant writing as requested by the Program Director and Grant Writer.

Qualifications: Applicant should have experience working on and running issue-based outreach campaigns. The applicant should have experience in developing and implementing effective outreach strategies to a wide variety of stakeholders through social media, email, phone calls, paid advertising, in person outreach at events, and in face to face meetings. Applicant should be an organized self-starter and a good team player. A demonstrated commitment to the environment and sustainable transportation policies and practices is required.

Salary: Commensurate with experience.

Philadelphia Council for Community Advancement (PCCA), a housing and community development agency has an immediate opening for an entry-level Housing Counselor to provide comprehensive housing services to families and individuals.   This full-time position will work with potential homebuyers to help them prepare to purchase a home, provide counseling to clients to prevent foreclosure and conduct financial education workshops and one-on-one assistance to clients to improve credit, increase savings and solve other housing-related issues.

Candidates must have a minimum of two (2) years of experience in housing counseling, social work or a related field.  A working knowledge of affordable housing issues, real estate or mortgage financing helpful.  Proficiency in Microsoft Office desired.  Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred.  A combination of experience and education will be considered.

Description:

The Council seeks to hire an organizer to implement Clean Air Council’s outreach, organizing, and education work related to proposed shale gas infrastructure projects in Pennsylvania including shale gas pipelines. The organizer will work to build the capacity of the public to meaningfully participate in the regulatory process around proposed projects and build the capacity of local leaders to organize other residents outside the regulatory process. The organizer will track the progress of new and existing shale gas projects and translate complex information in a way that is useful to the public to use in advocacy on the issue. The organizer’s work will complement the legal and regulatory oversight of the Council’s legal team. The organizer will report directly to the Community Outreach Director. Supervision and guidance will be provided, but the organizer should be self-motivated.

Responsibilities:

  • Educate the public, including residents, local officials and local groups, about the impacts of proposed shale gas infrastructure through presentations and educational materials.
  • Create or raise awareness about online and on-the-ground opportunities for public participation or action to influence decisions about shale gas infrastructure projects.
  • Provide training sessions to get residents the information and tools and skills they need to fully participate in the decisions impacting their communities (ie: comment-writing, traditional or social media, direct action, etc).

Qualifications:

  • At least one year of experience with community outreach, organizing, or educational work.
  • Experience giving public presentations.
  • Excellent research, written and oral communications skills.
  • The ability to quickly learn new issues well enough to teach others.
  • Previous experience working on or leading issue campaigns a plus.
  • Traditional media and social media skills a plus.

Other Considerations:

  • Some local or regional travel will be required. Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must attend occasional evening and weekend events or meetings as part of the work week.

Salary: $27,000 to $35,000 depending on experience.
