Philadelphia’s Green Stormwater Infrastructure Innovation Challenge

The City of Philadelphia and Citymart have launched an open call for information about how to reduce uncertainties around developing green stormwater infrastructure (GSI), beginning with more effective assessments of subsurface conditions and utility locations.

The City welcomes ideas from industry experts, non-profits, and creative individuals on all types of innovative solutions that could help identify subsurface conditions or utility locations at potential stormwater management sites.

Aug. 2: Integrating Health Into Comprehensive Planning

DVRPC is excited to host a one-day, interactive workshop, Integrating Health into Comprehensive Planning, on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 from 9AM – 4PM at DVRPC.  The workshop will be facilitated by Beth Altshuler, Senior Associate and Epidemiologist/Urban Planner with Raimi + Associates.

There is a growing interest in and awareness of the role that the built environment plays in supporting healthy individuals and communities. Recognizing that comprehensive plans help guide how a community grows and can support the development of healthier spaces and lifestyles, DVRPC’s Healthy Communities Task Force is hosting a hands-on workshop that will provide attendees with a better understanding of how to integrate health into their communities’ planning processes.

July 13-14: Certified Stormwater Inspector Training

Philadelphia is host to Certified Stormwater Inspector training on July 13 and 14.  The training is put on by the National Stormwater Center and is directed at municipal personnel.  The course covers inspection duties as well as background information on NPDES and the Clean Water Act.  Registration information is available at www.npdes.com and included on the training brochure.

Rothman Institute in Middletown Township Delaware County is a past Bates Award Winner

Applications are being received until June 2nd for the 2016 William H. Bates Memorial Awards Program for outstanding land development in the County.  The award is named for the late Chairman of the Delaware County Planning Commission and honors excellence in site planning development practices and the innovative use of land resources.

Anyone is eligible to make a nomination for a project believed to be worthy of recognition. Projects substantially completed during the past three years are eligible.

The Nomination Form must be submitted to the Planning Department no later than June 2, 2016.  Awards will be presented at the County Planning Commission Meeting on September 15th, 2016.

Past winners have included the Louella House renovation in Radnor Township, PPL Park Sports Stadium in Chester City, and the Riddle Hospital Health Care Center Four/Rothman Institute Medical Office in Middletown (pictured).

Local Planners Remember Jeff Featherstone

The planning community of Greater Philadelphia, including APAPASE, is saddened by the recent news of the passing of Dr. Jeffrey Featherstone, Director of the Center for Sustainable Communities and Professor of Research in the Department of Planning and Community Development in the Division of Architecture and Environmental Design at Temple University.
The Jeffrey Featherstone Memorial Scholarship has been established by the planning faculty in his honor. The funds will be used to support a graduate student in the Master of Science in City and Regional Planning program who shares Jeff’s passion for sustainable water resources management. Contributions to the Featherstone Memorial Scholarship may be sent or given to Mollie Repetto or Dr. Lynn Mandarano at Tyler School of Art of Temple University, 2001 N. 13th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19122.
