LRK – Urban Planning/Design Summer Internships

Summer internship opportunities for urban planning/design students are available in LRK’s Philadelphia studio, located in the Public Ledger Building at 6th and Chestnut Streets.  LRK is a planning and design firm with eight offices around the country and projects across the Americas. Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in progressively more difficult and responsible traffic engineering work.
  • Experience must include work in traffic signal system design, traffic safety, traffic planning, traffic operations, or traffic ITS.
  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Civil Engineering, from an accredited college or university.
  • Possess Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certificate

Job Description

The Office of Corridor Planning at DVRPC focuses on travel corridors or small areas, and involves extensive coordination among government and transportation agencies, considering all modes of transportation and their roles in shaping communities. Our goal is to apply a full range of planning and transportation analysis tools and principles, in order to fulfill DVRPC’s vision of making a great region even greater.

This position involves planning and technical analysis, and direct participation in regionally significant multimodal planning projects. Work involves the determination and selection of project objectives and methods, and responsibility for project deliverables. This includes technical analysis, development of medium- and long-range plans, and various types of street, highway, and transit evaluations.

This position requires project-level collaboration with a diversified group of planning and technical staff. Work is performed in accordance with general agency policies and professional standards with results subject to review by the Manager, Office of Corridor Planning.

Responsibilities

  • Develop effective communication strategies (written, graphical, and presentation) to explain project concepts and engage with colleagues, policymaking officials, members of the public, and advisory groups.
  • Develop, implement, and coordinate multimodal transportation projects, including specification of the problem, data collection and analysis, interpretation and reporting of results, and the development of recommendations for project implementation.
  • Conduct technical studies which evaluate the effectiveness of a transportation system and then analyze alternative improvement strategies to determine how well they meet desired measures of effectiveness.
  • Use planning and engineering computer software such as GIS, travel simulation software, and other techniques to evaluate corridor and area-specific traffic problems and develop solutions.
  • Calculate travel time, delay, level of service, volume/capacity ratio, and other operational measures of effectiveness for highway, transit, and non-motorized modes.
  • Conduct field views of project locations to compile an inventory of existing physical and operating conditions.
  • Provide technical assistance to member governments, consultants, and the public.
  • Organize and manage technical committee meetings.
  • Provide other technical assistance, as required.

Qualifications

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, and objectives of transportation planning and traffic operations, with the ability to relate this knowledge to the development and analysis of a regional transportation system and its components.
  • Solid analytical, quantitative, and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to effectively present results of research and technical analysis in oral, written and graphic form.
  • Ability to plan, assign, and collaborate with the work of other project team members.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, planning officials, and the general public.
  • Experience with field surveys, data analysis, and system evaluation.
  • Experience with traffic operations software such as Synchro, microsimulation software such as VISSIM and/or Travel forecasting software such as VISUM is a plus.

Experience and Training

To classify as a Level RA I/Transportation Planner or TE/Transportation Engineer I, a minimum of one year professional experience in transportation planning or engineering, or in social science research work is required. To classify as a Level RA II or TE II, a minimum of three years is required. Such experience may have been gained from a combination of experience and training. Training may have been gained through graduation from an accredited four-year college or university, with major coursework in Urban Planning or Civil Engineering. A Master’s degree or a full year of intern or co-operative education experience can be substituted for one year of experience.

We are seeking a Civil Engineer with 4 to 8 years of experience designing transportation and/or site development projects. The position is ideally suited for a candidate with experience in both design and project management of civil design involving urban streets, multi-use trails, and other bicycle and pedestrian facilities, but also with experience in PennDOT and/or NJDOT roads and highways or site development.

The position will focus mainly on multi-modal transportation design projects, but the ideal candidate should also have an interest and willingness to assist our team with projects involving site design, green stormwater infrastructure, parks, and other neighborhood improvements for various public and private clients in Philadelphia and the surrounding region. The candidate should also have experience in the development of signing and pavement marking plans, erosion and sedimentation control, grading, and traffic control. The candidate should also express an interest in assisting with bicycle and pedestrian planning, including region-wide active transportation plans, corridor master plans and trail routing and feasibility studies.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assist or lead in the design of multiple ongoing transportation projects, including bicycle & pedestrian trails.
  • Manage 1-2 engineering designers, and assist with internal project management responsibilities.
  • Technical design duties will include design drafting, report writing, specification development, scheduling, QA/QC, budgeting, and cost estimating.
  • Coordinate with internal project team members across several NV5 offices, subconsultants, public agencies, clients, participation in project meetings, and assisting with community engagement efforts as needed.

New Kensington Community Development Corporation (NKCDC) strengthens the physical, social and economic fabric of Philadelphia, by being a catalyst for sustainable development and community building. We believe in a multi-faceted approach to neighborhood revitalization, working with housing services, economic development, real estate development, vacant land management, community engagement and neighborhood planning.

NKCDC is administering a three-year grant through the U.S. Department of Justice’s Innovations in Community-Based Crime Reduction program. Our lead program partners are fellow Kensington service providers IMPACT Services and HACE. We propose a three-year collaboration that unites law enforcement, human services, community development, and community volunteers around shared values and common priorities. Our proposed strategies pull from national best practices and decades of our own experience serving the Kensington community that demonstrate how neighborhood crime can be reduced through a comprehensive approach that increases collaborative problem-solving, improves social cohesion and community trust, reduces physical disorder and provides new opportunities for youth and adults alike.

Function

As part of the grant, NKCDC is hiring a full-time staff person to coordinate and shepherd this grant for its duration. The Community Engagement Project Manager will lead collaborative efforts to improve safety and quality of life in the Kensington and Fairhill neighborhoods, acting as a liaison between residents, community-based organizations, community anchors, and police. The overarching goal for the position is to integrate the resources of people and institutions which influence crime and perceptions in the neighborhood to uncover more strategic and effective remedies for safety problems. Responsibilities include organizing multiple phases of community input, performing required outreach, convening and facilitating all needed community and stakeholder meetings, and coordinating with our academic research partner in the Rutgers University Center for Urban Research and Education.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the efforts of residents, community organizations and law enforcement to address safety and crime issues, such as by creating/staffing a multiagency safety committee or task force.
  • Oversee all aspects of the Planning Process as required by the U.S. Department of Justice, including community engagement, data collection, survey administration, partner meetings, and drafting final report.
  • Mobilize residents and businesses to participate in activities focused on community cohesion and safety, with special focus on youth engagement and improving communication lines between residents and police.
  • Serve as point person for community volunteers — including resident Community Connectors, surveyors, and anchor businesses.
  • Work with evaluation research partners at Rutgers University Center for Urban Research and Education.
  • Cultivate and steward the desired institutional relationship between NKCDC, HACE, and IMPACT and the police as determined by the project Leadership Committee to encourage strategic resource-sharing and creative collaboration.
  • Coordinate communication between internal Leadership Committee and stakeholder Steering Committee.
  • Advocate for the community on public safety and resource issues.
  • Coordinate community events and activities planned and sponsored by NKCDC, HACE, and IMPACT as they relate to this project.
  • Create and distribute crime prevention and safety education information.
  • Document and publicize neighborhood safety achievements to build confidence and buy-in among program partners.
  • Represent NKCDC, HACE, and IMPACT at appropriate meetings, presentations, and public events.
  • Compile and maintain a calendar of events, database of participants, and administrative records and reports for NKCDC, HACE, and IMPACT.
  • Develop and manage the safety program budget, including overseeing funding contracts and required funder reports.
  • Assist in securing additional grant funding consistent with safety program objectives and manage additional grants as needed.
