April 13: Delaware Valley Smart Growth Alliance Hosts Andre M. Perry

DATE: Tuesday, April 13 | TIME: 8:00-9:00AM

In the second of a three-part series, DVSGA is hosting Andre M. Perry—a nationally known and respected commentator on race, structural inequality, education and economic inclusion—who will discuss the role of race in land-use patterns and policies. In addition to Perry’s work at Brookings, he is also a scholar-in-residence at American University, a columnist for the Hechinger Report, and the author of Know Your Price: Valuing Black Lives and Property in America’s Black Cities, which is available for purchase.

Smart growth has traditionally advocated for economic and community development strategies that curb urban sprawl and worsening environmental conditions to create healthy, environmentally resilient and economically robust places; however, little attention has been paid to how race impacts planning and outcomes. We look to this discussion to reveal concrete strategies that proponents of smart growth can use to end inequality that has historically existed in land use. Dr. Perry will be interviewed by Charnelle Hicks, principal of CHPlanning, a firm providing comprehensive, municipal, transportation and environmental planning and community outreach programs.

March 2&3, and 4&5: Economy League Well City Challenge Pitch Competition

Research shows that millennials–those born between 1981 and 1996–are suffering from more physical and mental health challenges than previous generations. Millennials are the largest population in the U.S., the most educated, and the largest wealth generators over the next two decades – yet they are in poorer health than previous generations. Blue Cross Blue Shield Association’s 2019 The Health of Millennials Report found that eight out of 10 top conditions have double-digit increases among millennials and 6 out of 10 are behavioral health conditions. How we handle millennial health and mental health challenges could make or break the economy.

National Community Planning Month

October is National Community Planning Month!

Planners work to improve the well-being of all people living in our communities by taking a comprehensive perspective. This approach leads to safer, resilient, more equitable, and more prosperous communities. We celebrate the role that planning plays in creating great communities each October with National Community Planning Month.

Planning is more important than ever as communities continue to navigate the disruptive changes brought about by the pandemic.

This year’s theme — Planning Is Essential to Recovery — highlights how planning and planners can lead communities to equitable, resilient, and long-lasting recovery from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

New APA Video Series – Voices of Equity in Planning

APA has launched a new video series, Voices of Equity in Planning.

Equity is a guiding principle for all who participate in the process of planning as advisors, advocates, and decision makers. In this video series, we are proud to lift the voices of planners who have been centering equity in their work to correct racial injustice, mitigate disparity, and improve the quality of life for marginalized people in all communities.

Videos were made possible by the generous gift of time from members of APA’s Social Equity Task Force, appointed in 2018 by then-President Cynthia Bowen, FAICP.

APA PA Scholarship Deadline Extended
