POSITION SUMMARY: 

Possesses planning background and experience. Prepares written and graphic reports, projects, and GIS maps. Conducts and prepares reviews relating to subdivision and land development, and community and environmental planning.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reports to a Senior Planner, the Director of Community Planning, and the Executive Director as applicable.
  • Prepares or assists in the production of planning, zoning, and specialized plans and studies.
  • Prepares or assists in the production of GIS maps and GIS related projects.
  • Compiles and reviews pertinent land use, demographic, social, economic or other planning-related data to determine existing conditions and future trends.

  • Attends meetings with staff, municipal officials and other agencies as required.
  • Serves as a liaison between the Planning Commission and municipal officials.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with other staff members in a ‘team approach’ for projects.
  • Assists with the identification and coordination of grant applications as required.
  • Coordinates with local, regional, state, and federal agencies to address planning issues (as necessary).
  • Performs similar or related duties as assigned by the Executive Director or other Directors within the Department.

Position Summary 

The Senior Transportation Planner is a mid-level planning professional with demonstrated  expertise in planning policy, public engagement, and interdepartmental coordination. This role  manages complex planning projects, provides mentorship to junior staff, and develops subject  matter expertise in specific planning topics. The Senior Transportation Planner supports the  Montgomery County Planning Commission’s mission by applying technical knowledge,  leadership, and collaborative skills to enhance the county’s communities through sustainable  planning practices.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Review subdivision and land development proposals for regulatory compliance and best  practices.

Section-Specific Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the delivery and planning of the county’s road, bridge, and trail capital projects • Oversee efforts to implement the county’s transportation plans, such as the county  comprehensive plan, Bike Montco and the aviation policy plan
  • Perform work tasks for short- and long-range planning projects with local municipalities,  PennDOT, DVRPC, and regional transit authorities

Minimum Qualifications

This transportation planning position will be located in DVRPC’s Office of Transit, Bicycle, and Pedestrian Planning (OTBP) with projects spread across the office’s portfolio of work. The office also focuses on the safe integration of transit and active transportation modes with one another within their community and development context, informed by engagement with the public and our partners. OTBP’s major ongoing work includes projects through DVRPC’s tactical urbanism support and travel demand management programs, support for the City of Trenton with technical assistance to implement Complete Streets and Vision Zero, and planning and technical analysis to advance SEPTA programs and goals.

Typical project tasks include finding patterns in transportation and demographic data, collaborating with regional stakeholders, and preparing reports that summarize study findings in a clear and concise manner using creative design, mapping, and illustration. This work benefits from the ability to think analytically, visually, and spatially. It requires a strong interest in multimodal transportation and competence with design software. PWD GSI Planning Graduate Intern – Summer 2025

The Philadelphia Water Department’s (PWD) Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) Planning Group is seeking a highly-qualified student intern to support the implementation of City’s Green City, Clean Waters (GCCW) program.

The GSI Planning Group advances the ability of the Department to plan and prioritize GSI projects (i.e. tree trenches, rain gardens, etc.) by identifying and vetting potential GSI locations, developing conceptual level plans, and coordinating the queuing of projects through to the design phase.  PWD’s planning approach includes detailed technical analysis, relationship building with implementation partners, and management of project prioritization. Position Description

The candidate selected will support staff planners on the GSI Planning Team to locate potential GSI locations, develop concept plans, conduct site visits, and modify concepts as needed.  Typical tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Assess existing conditions, historic documents, community priorities, physical constraints, and opportunities at a city-block scale
  • Conduct spatial analysis of potential GSI sites and develop conceptual designs in GIS
  • Complete project checklists of design considerations, land use, and community information
  • Develop visuals for external or internal audiences in coordination with internal staff
  • Data entry, editing, processing, analysis, and general data management
  • At times, conduct field work, collects parcel data and searches land and utility records

Qualifications

Applicants are required to meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time graduate student
  • Course of study in the following academic departments: Planning, GIS, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Public Policy, and/or Environmental Studies

  • Assist with identifying and writing trail and open space grant applications; coordinate with other MCPC staff and outside entities as required.
  • Participate in professional open space, conservation, and trail planning events.
  • Engage in professional outreach and development; assist with submitting presentation proposals and represent MCPC at relevant conferences/seminars.
  • Coordinate with county solicitors as required.
  • Maintain professional contacts and certifications.

WSP – Transportation Planning Intern – Summer 2025

This Opportunity

WSP USA hosts hundreds of interns across the United States to gain hands-on, meaningful work experience to enhance their education and professional aptitude. Our interns gain exposure to real projects while working side by side with senior staff. Through our Developing Professionals Network, interns gain mentorship, networking opportunities and lifelong career connections.

Our Advisory Team is seeking a Transportation Planning Intern to work out of our Philadelphia, PA office. This temporary position is seeking individuals currently enrolled in an Undergraduate or Graduate degree program.

This internship will be part of the WSP Summer Internship Program. As a summer intern, you have the opportunity to participate in our 12-week program scheduled to start on May 19th, 2025. The individual start date of the internship may be flexible.

Your Impact

  • Conduct research and literature studies for a variety of transportation and planning projects and tasks.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret data (e.g., demographic, land use, traffic, and environmental).
  • Create maps and graphics, and develop supporting information and materials for reports, presentations, and other work items.
  • Assist in developing design alternatives, project recommendations, and prepare case studies.
  • Develop reports, technical memorandum, and other interim/final deliverables and work documents.
  • Help coordinate and conduct field work and data collection tasks.
  • Help organize and attend public and stakeholder meetings.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Actively enrolled in an accredited Planning, Transportation Engineering, or related, Undergraduate program with an anticipated graduation date of August 2025 or later.
  • Must be 18 or older.
  • Demonstrated interest in Transportation Planning, or related, field and have a strong desire to advance skills related to WSP’s work and projects.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Capable of taking direction from leadership, mentors, and managers to executive projects.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Authorization to work in the United States at the start of the internship

Preferred Qualifications

  • Actively enrolled in an accredited Planning, Transportation Engineering, or related, Masters or PhD program with an anticipated graduation date of August 2025 or later.
  • Experience using ESRI ArcGIS, Adobe Creative Suite, planning databases, or data handling software.
  • Prior internship and leadership involvement on campus
