May 20: Philadelphia 1865: A City on the Edge

In 1865, Philadelphia was a city on the edge of grief, growth, and genius. That year saw the joy of Northern victory dashed by the grief of Lincoln’s assassination, unprecedented growth for the city, and a growing realization that abolishing slavery did not mean an end to the city’s race problems. At the same time, the genius of local science, education, and benevolent entrepreneurs achieved the critical mass that launched Philadelphia into modernity. Join us to explore a pivotal time in our nation and city’s history with a Weeknights at the Wagner lecture by Bruce Laverty, Gladys Brooks Curator of Architecture at the Athenaeum of Philadelphia. 1865 is also the year that the Wagner’s National Landmark building opened, and we will celebrate the building’s 150^th anniversary with a Wagner cake competition and special member reception where the cakes will be served.

EarthFest 2015 Recap – Youth Engagement and Planning

“If you could do whatever you wanted with this lot, what would you do and why?” David, age 9, responded, “I would plan a kingdom so that I could be king.” If only we could all have the visionary powers to dream up a kingdom like David (and if only it were that easy)! Along with David, hundreds of curious young visitors stopped by the APAPA-SE activity booth at Temple University’s EarthFest 2015 at the Ambler Campus on Friday, April 24^th. They each were prompted to respond to that same question we asked David.
