Join us for APAPASE’s Annual Event, which includes an opportunity to meet and mingle with other Greater Philadelphia planners, hear an educational presentation (1 CM credit requested), and honor the winners of the John E. Pickett Student Scholarship competition. Ticket price includes two drink tickets and heavy hors d’oeuvres.

Water, Water Everywhere: A Dialogue on Flooding and Disasters in Greater Philadelphia

The 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season is on track to be one of the top ten most active seasons on record, with five major hurricanes, and a streak of eight straight hurricanes from August 9 to September 29. This begs the question: what is the role of planners and planning in reducing risk to flooding and increasing community resilience? How can flood risk reduction meet other community planning goals, like water quality improvement, neighborhood development, and community cohesion? Join us at the APAPASE Annual Event to explore these issues and more. A panel of water and resilience planners will explore these issues and more with APA members from across the region.

You’re invited to FitCityPHL 3!

FitCityPHL is an annual full-day symposium that explores design strategies in workplaces, neighborhoods, and cities that improve health. It brings together individuals representing the sectors of public health, architecture, planning, design, landscape architecture, development, research and evaluation, academia, philanthropy, and government to learn about how the built environment can have a positive impact on the negative health trends currently facing communities – particularly obesity and other chronic conditions.

At this year’s symposium, attendees will interact with public sector leaders in a town hall format, learn about community engagement and workplace active design strategies, and participate in several walking tours highlighting local examples of active design.

APAPASE’s “Inside the Planner’s Studio” series asks these questions and more. We’re honored to have Anne Fadullon, Director of Planning & Development for the City of Philadelphia as our 4th speaker in the annual “Inside the Planners Studio” speaker series. Karen Thompson of the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation will be asking Ms. Fadullon about her career, civic engagement, and her advice for planners. Karen will skip the small talk and ask Ms. Fadullon the big questions: What pivotal moments have shaped her career? If she could go back, would she do anything differently? You’ll have to come to find out!

Drexel Announces Urban Innovation Fellowships

The Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation at Drexel University invites you to apply for one of three [3] Urban Innovation Fellowships through this brief application form. Lindy is looking for Philadelphians who are working on urban challenges at any scale – from the block to the neighborhood to the city – who would benefit from the support and the expertise of the Lindy Institute, its faculty fellows, and staff.

Fellows receive the following benefits:

Being paired with experts who will help them think through strategies in real time during an Urban Innovation workshop from October 30 – November 1 (selected applicants should be available to participate in this event). The workshop will include site visits, work sessions and public presentations over the 3 days.
A $15,000 award to continue to work on their project at Drexel. Fellows will receive guidance from the Lindy Institute to help determine the best use of the stipend, but they will have latitude to decide whether it be used as income or funding for implementation.

Philadelphia’s World Heritage City status: What does it mean for tourism in your neighborhood or community?

Philadelphia is the United States’ first World Heritage City. What does this mean for Philadelphia neighborhoods and nearby Greater Philadelphia communities? Hear from speakers familiar with neighborhood and community development, historic preservation, and tourism and hospitality. This event is part of GlobalPhilly 2017. DVRPC’s Strategies for Older Suburbs Roundtable Series highlights challenges older suburbs and downtowns are facing. The Roundtable Series provides a means for networking and exchanging ideas with organizations facing similar concerns.

Apply for Philadelphia Citizen Planning Institute by 9/20!

Citizens Planning Institute (CPI) will be accepting applications for the Fall 2017 course from August 30th – September 20th. This seven-week course empowers citizens to take a more effective and active role in shaping the future of their neighborhoods and of Philadelphia through a greater understanding of city planning and the steps involved in development projects.

Special topics this session include Diversifying Your Organization, Fixing Neighborhood Issues – L&I and 311, and Resources for Neighborhood Development. There are more details on the courses in Fall 2017 CPI course summaries.

Classes are held on Wednesday evenings October 11th – November 15th from 6-9 pm at 1515 Arch Street in Center City.

Teach Green Values: Become a Keep Philadelphia Beautiful Ambassador

Keep Philadelphia Beautiful (KPB) is looking for passionate volunteers to serve as sustainability ambassadors at School District of Philadelphia schools. Sustainability ambassadors will be responsible for leading presentations on neighborhood beautification measures, such as recycling and composting.

KPB provides in-person training and presentation materials to ambassadors prior to engagement activities. The presentations have been developed with the Philadelphia Streets Department and the School District of Philadelphia through the District’s GreenFutures initiative (GreenFutures). A commitment of 2, 1-hour presentations per semester is required, and volunteers will be assigned to schools that have expressed interest in the program.
