Tomorrow!: APAPASE Emerging Professionals’ 2013 Reading Viaduct Tour — Just a Few Spots Left!

On Saturday, May 18, the American Planning Association SE PA Section(APAPASE) Emerging Professionals Group invites you to an exclusive look at one of Philadelphia’s most talked-about pieces of urban infrastructure: the Reading Viaduct. Following a very successful sell-out tour in the spring of 2012, we are excited to offer another opportunity for planners, park enthusiasts, and anyone who is interested in the future of Philadelphia’s public spaces to explore the historic rail trestle. The founders of the Reading Viaduct Project will provide a guided tour and discuss the developing vision for Philadelphia’s own high line.

Registration is limited to 35 people, so sign up early to secure a spot. Participants will be required to wear appropriate shoes/clothing in order to take part in the tour. The tour will begin promptly at 10:30am on Noble Street between 13th Street and Broad Street.

You can’t learn about what makes a Vibrant Street work in a conference room. From speaker sessions in the Row’s Arts Theater to walking tours to dining in Bethesda’s restaurants and wine bar, this Learning Lab will send you home with an authentic Vibrant Street experience. More importantly, you will return to your community with an ACTION PLAN you have crafted with our Vibrant Streets specialists.

Attendees will learn from presenters about current Vibrant Streets best practices and the future of Vibrant Streets around the world, land banking for retail redevelopment, creating a pop-up gallery space through the ArtPlace program, creating a temporary retail district, how communities can collect data through an app called LocalData, how existing suburban developments can be redesigned into more urban and more sustainable places, and how a foundation works with a community and the American Sign Museum to create effective and creative district branding.

Mitchell Silver, AICP and current APA President will be one of the instructors for the Learning Lab.

Feb. 21: On American Main Streets: A Conversation With Miles Orvell and Sandy Sorlien

What is an American Main Street? Is it a memory or image that has been perpetuated through American writing and art? A real space within new urbanist town planning? Or is it a place where some are welcome and others are shunned? Perhaps it is all of the above. Join us to examine these real and imagined notions of American main streets with Miles Orvell and Sandy Sorlien. Orvell is the author of The Death and Life of Main Street: Small Towns in American Memory, Space, and Community (University of North Carolina Press 2012) and professor of English and American studies at Temple. In 2009, he received the Bode-Pearson Prize for lifetime achievement, awarded by the American Studies Association. Sorlien is the author of Fifty Houses: Images from the American Road (Johns Hopkins 2002), and is finishing a book about Main Streets in America with the working title The Heart of Town. She has worked since 2004 on new urbanist plans and codes for walkable streets.
