Call for Mentors for Planning Students

Remember when you were a planning student and weren’t sure which concentration to choose or how to navigate the job market? 

For the seventh year, the American Planning Association of Southeast Pennsylvania (APAPA-SE) is launching a mentor program to connect professionals in the planning field and local city planning graduate students. The program will include students from the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University. This program has helped students to learn about an array of planning jobs and day to day work responsibilities of planners as well as to receive advice for navigating the job and internship search.

If you are interested in signing up to be a mentor, please fill out this form and email your resume to planningmentorpa@gmail.com.  We are asking mentors to submit materials by Wednesday, September 10th.

Your Help Is Needed!  Short Survey to Assist New Graduates in Job Searching

Please take this brief community planning survey to assist new graduates; it will take four minutes or less of your time. The survey is designed for all planning professionals representing the broad range of specializations, workplace environments, and geographic locations. The findings will be shared with planning students and mentorship programs. Example questions include:
  • What qualifications are most important for entry-level planners?
  • What technical skills are preferred or necessary to succeed at your workplace?
  • What interview methods are used by your company or organization?

Sign up to Volunteer With Future City Philadelphia

Happy New Year from Future City Philadelphia!  We are pleased to announce a new location for this year’s regional competition – SAP America, 3999 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA.  Our 41 participating schools are hard at work on their models and presentations and are getting ready for the big event.  We need volunteers for the following positions:

 

PRELIMINARY JUDGE:  be a member of a judging team that listens to, asks questions of, and judges the preliminary teams.

Time commitment – Saturday, January 26, 8:00AM – 12:00PM.  Preliminary Judges are required to attend a training session if you have not judged before.  The training session will be a teleconference at 12pm on1/22.

 

SPECIAL AWARDS EVALUATOR: talk with teach team’s members to determine which team best meets the criteria of your organization’s special award.

Time commitment – Saturday, January 26, 8:00AM – 12:00PM.

 

GENERAL VOLUNTEER:  help run the competition by volunteering to help with registration, act as a team escort, take photos, update our website, etc.

Time commitment – Saturday, January 26, 8:00AM – 1:00PM.   A few volunteers are needed starting at7:00AM and a few more to help during the afternoon.

Oct. 24: Mentoring Program Kickoff at TRF

APAPASE and The Reinvestment Fund are pleased to kick off the 2013-2014 Mentor Program at a mixer held at the TRF office on Thursday, October 24.  This will be an opportunity for students and professionals who have been matched as mentees and mentors to meet each other as well as fellow program participants.

Professionals who are interested in learning more about the program and becoming a mentor this year are welcome to attend!

Looking for Mentors for Planning Students

Mentors agree to be available 2-3 times throughout the year to meet with students on an informal basis and will have the opportunity to meet with mentees at events sponsored by the APAPASE. You do not have to be a member of APAPASE to be a mentor in the program and the specifics of meetings with your mentee are up to you.

Recap: Environmental Careers Roundtable Discussion

On Friday, April 5 the APAPASE Mentoring Program held a professional roundtable discussion at PennDesign focused on Environmental Careers. Professional guests included Kathleen Grady, Director of Sustainability at Temple University, Chris Linn, Senior Environmental Planner at the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, and Emily Linn, Environmental Protection Specialist at U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The informal discussion was moderated Jeannette Brugger, Pedestrian, Bicycle and Open Space Planner at the Philadelphia City Planning Commission.
