Congrats to 2014’s winning scholarship papers! APAPA-Southeast received many great submissions, and we were honored to choose the following three papers as the finest of this year’s crop. The winners will be feted at a reception in the coming weeks.

Two Southeast Section Students Honored by AICP

The Pennsylvania Chapter and Southeast Section congratulate Jenna Oskowitz from Temple University and Tali Cantor from the University of Pennsylvania for their recognition as one of 2014’s Outstanding Students. The AICP Outstanding Student Award recognizes outstanding attainment in the study of planning by students graduating from Planning Accreditation Board–accredited planning programs during the academic year of the award. April 25: Volunteer at Temple EarthFest

Every year, Temple holds an Earth Day celebration called Earthfest. Over 10,000 students and adults attend. The Southeast Section staffs a booth on planning and the chapter. We typically use historic aerials to discuss land use changes over time and how to plan for them. The students (not all of them of course) typically react well to the aerials, trying to identify uses and answering questions on what they would do to plan. (We usually are involved with a treasure hunt stamp and usually have candy, both of which add to the demand at our booth.)

The event will be held Friday April 25 at the Temple Ambler campus from 9:30 AM to 2 PM, although we need to get there earlier, probably around 8:30. The event is lots of fun. We need volunteers, preferably two people at a time for two hour shifts. If you’re interested, please contact John Federico at jefederico@urbanengineers.com.

This year, three projects were recognized by the Section. Each represents excellence in research projects at the graduate level from area universities.

This research paper explored use opportunities for City schools that were programmed for closure. The project thoroughly investigated the neighborhoods in which they were located and proposed a series of realistic alternative uses.

The policy recommendations in this report outline a new framework for school disposition and reuse in Philadelphia.

“With smart planning, vigorous community engagement, strong public leadership, and savvy private investment, closed public school buildings can be repurposed as assets enabling Philadelphia to catalyze positive neighborhood change”

Urban Design Returns to Fleisher

This month, Fleisher Art Memorial will bring back its popular Urban Planning Workshop. Through this four-session course, students will examine the theory and practice of urban design, with an emphasis on architecture, public space, and community development.

“This class attracts a great mix of urbanists, including curious citizens, civic leaders, artists, and experienced designers,” says Benjamin Cromie who is returning as the course instructor. “It’s a great summer project for anyone looking for a new way to explore Philadelphia or cities in general.” Cromie is an urban planner and GIS specialist at CHPlanning in Philadelphia.

In addition to exploring the history of human settlement, students will learn about current and proposed building projects in Philadelphia. Registration also includes one urban design tour (7/16 or 7/30). The course will run on Thursdays, 6:30-9:30 pm at Fleisher Art Memorial, 719 Catherine Street, from July 11 through August 1. Includes some drawing exercises; all experience levels welcome.

2013-2014 Academic Year Scholarships from APA-PA

Each year the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Planning Association offers scholarships to support individuals in an effort to enhance planning at the local, regional, state, and national levels. The Chapter, and more specifically the Boards of the Pitkin Fund and the Leslie and Greta Spaulding Education Fund Trust, have released their annual application for scholarships. The deadline to apply for the 2013-2014 academic year scholarships is April 30, 2013. Recipients will be announced by June 30, 2013. In order to apply, candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements:

The Applicant shall be a resident of Pennsylvania, or a student of a Pennsylvania institution, enrolled in a PAB accredited or planning related undergraduate or graduate program in Planning curriculum that has a demonstrated track record of preparing students to become Planners; and
The Student shall be entering his or her junior or senior year in the fall semester or be enrolled in a graduate program; and
The Student shall provide evidence of financial need by providing copy of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or its renewal form; and
The Student shall have demonstrated competent academic skills including a minimum 3.0 GPA as evidenced by transcripts and receive the recommendation of the program chairperson; and
The Student shall demonstrate an intention to pursue a career in planning as described in an attached essay.

15 Free CMs AND Getting Social Media and App Savvy

TechniCity is an extensive, free Massive Online Open Course being taught this spring by Jennifer Evans-Cowley (The Ohio State University) and Tom Sanchez (Virginia Tech). This course begins by examining how our cities are changing, and then jumps into how technology is used to engage with the public to support decision-making. Participants will examine tools for analyzing the city, and explore the infrastructure that makes the real time city possible. The four week course has been approved for 15 hours of CM credit and starts on May 4th. “Last year we had a great mix of aspiring urbanists, including curious citizens, civic leaders, amateur artists, and experienced designers,” says Benjamin Cromie who is returning as the course instructor. “It’s a great winter project for anyone looking for a new way to explore Philadelphia or cities in general.” Cromie is an urban planner and GIS specialist at CHPlanning in Philadelphia.

In addition to exploring the history of human settlement, students will create a hypothetical design for a real-world site. The course will run on Tuesdays, 6:30-9:30 pm at Fleisher Art Memorial, 719 Catherine Street, from February 12 through March 12. Some drawing required; all experience levels welcome.

Tuition: $130 (Fleisher members), $150 (nonmembers)
