Register Today for Course in Zoning

The Delaware County Planning Department is sponsoring the Course in Zoning during the evenings of September 22, 29, and October 6. This “nuts and bolts” course deals with the most complex and provocative topic in local planning.  It stresses the fundamentals for developing a sound zoning ordinance using the authority granted in the PA Municipalities Planning Code. The course includes mapping exercises, reviews of ordinance provisions, and discussions of problem situations.

Topics include:
· Relationship of zoning to comprehensive plans
· Key terms used in zoning and how they are applied
· Critical issues in drafting a zoning ordinance and map
· Procedures for adopting and amending ordinances
· Basic zoning administration

Apply for Philadelphia Citizen Planning Institute!

CPI photoCitizens Planning Institute (CPI) will be accepting applications for the Fall 2016 course from August 22nd – September 19th. This seven-week course empowers citizens to take a more effective and active role in shaping the future of their neighborhoods and of Philadelphia through a greater understanding of city planning and the steps involved in development projects.

Special topics this session include community engagement 101, historic preservation, and urban agriculture and food access.

Classes are held on Wednesday evenings October 5th – November 16th from 6-9pm at 1515 Arch Street in Center City.

Delaware County Seeking Nominations for Outstanding Developments

Rothman Institute in Middletown Township Delaware County is a past Bates Award Winner

Applications are being received until June 2nd for the 2016 William H. Bates Memorial Awards Program for outstanding land development in the County.  The award is named for the late Chairman of the Delaware County Planning Commission and honors excellence in site planning development practices and the innovative use of land resources.

Anyone is eligible to make a nomination for a project believed to be worthy of recognition. Projects substantially completed during the past three years are eligible.

The Nomination Form must be submitted to the Planning Department no later than June 2, 2016.  Awards will be presented at the County Planning Commission Meeting on September 15th, 2016.

Past winners have included the Louella House renovation in Radnor Township, PPL Park Sports Stadium in Chester City, and the Riddle Hospital Health Care Center Four/Rothman Institute Medical Office in Middletown (pictured).

Classic Towns Trolley Tour May 20

On Friday, May 20, 2016, American Planning Association, Pennsylvania Chapter, Southeast Section is co-sponsoring an event with DVRPC and other regional partners to explore the Classic Towns in our own backyard! The all-day Classic Towns trolley tour seeks to highlight the positive efforts and successes of the towns of Lansdowne and Media while providing an opportunity for community leaders from throughout the region to convene and share their stories and ideas. Classic Towns of Greater Philadelphia is a DVRPC initiative designed to foster the growth of the region’s older communities by promoting what makes each community a wonderful place to live, work, and play.

You can register for this useful and enjoyable event, and to explore the resources and benefits of the Classic Towns program. Even if you’re not designated as a Classic Town, the Trolley Tour and other events provided by the program offer excellent educational opportunities. This program is useful for municipal managers, staff, business associations, elected officials, or anyone interested in seeing how to make their downtown more vibrant!
