March 10: DVRPC’s Healthy Communities Task Force Meeting: Age-Friendly Communities (2.5 CM)

This meeting will focus on age-friendly communities with presentations from Amanda Lehning, Assistant Professor at UMD School of Social Work, on her recently published book, Creating Aging-Friendly Communities, and Karin Morris, Manager of DVRPC’s Office of Smart Growth, on lessons from her German Marshall Fellowship on Age-Friendly UK Efforts.

The meeting will also feature a panel discussion on age-friendly efforts in the region, featuring Kate Clark, Planner of Policy and Program Development at Philadelphia Corporation for Aging, Joe Lukach, CEO of the Ralston Center, and Ann Torregrossa, Chair of Swarthmore Borough’s Aging-in-Place Task Force. Finally, the meeting will conclude with a facilitated conversation around what your community can do to encourage age-friendly places.

Have you ever put tremendous effort into a grant application only to be turned down for funding? Do you struggle with writing grant proposals on behalf of your government agency, non-profit, or community development corporation? Have you ever wondered how you could improve your grant applications so they are more likely to be funded in the future? Join DVRPC for a one–day comprehensive grantwriting workshop! Participants will increase their understanding of what type of information belongs in each proposal section, learn how to avoid common grant writing mistakes, and increase the odds of having their proposal selected. The workshop will feature short lectures, small group activities, and the opportunity to ask questions. In the afternoon, we will use DVRPC’s Transportation and Community Development Initiative (TCDI) application as a template to discuss what makes a project compelling to a funder, and how to make your project come to life despite word count limitations.

Join DVRPC’s Public Participation Task Force

The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC), as part of its ongoing efforts to engage citizens in Greater Philadelphia, has opened a selection round to solicit new members for its Public Participation Task Force (PPTF).

The PPTF is comprised of Board-appointed members and citizens at-large selected through an application process open to all residents of the nine-county DVRPC region. The task force provides ongoing access to the regional planning and decision-making process, reviews timely issues, serves as a conduit for DVRPC information to organizations and communities across the region, and assists the Commission in implementing public outreach strategies. DVRPC is seeking applicants with an interest in planning, knowledge of regional issues, a history of civic engagement, and effective communications skills. Task force membership will also strive to reflect the region’s geographic, ethnic, cultural, and economic diversity. Individuals interested in serving as members on the task force must submit an application by December 31, 2015. Coming up with reasonable and enforceable sign codes can often be a complex and controversial process. With so many community stakeholders caring about sign codes, it is important to get the most accurate, up-to-date information and expertise as possible. The seminar will present modules that educate on the technology within signs, sign code issues, understanding electronic message centers, and the importance of signs to business. In light of the new challenges imposed by the recent Supreme Court Reed ruling, attendees will be presented with important interim and permanent policy changes to bring municipal ordinances into compliance with the Court’s new precedents. Local planners will present on the development and implementation of the Montgomery County Model Sign Ordinance.

This meeting will focus on equity and active transportation with presentations on the state of active transportation and equity, how complete streets policies affect different communities, and what Philadelphia’s bike share program, Indego, has done to be more inclusive.

DVRPC’s Regional Community and Economic Development Forum (RCEDF) will meet next Friday, October 9^th at DVRPC to discuss the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program. The meeting will begin with a program overview and, with its authorizing legislation set to expire on September 30^th, a discussion of what the future holds for it. The overview will be followed by a discussion of how EB-5 has been used to fund various projects in Greater Philadelphia. Attached is the agenda – if you have not already done so, please RSVP by emailing RCEDF_RSVP@dvrpc.org no later than Wednesday, October 7^th if you are planning to attend. How Immigrant Businesses Can Bring New Vitality to Downtown Retail Districts (2.5 CM credits)

DVRPC’s Strategies for Older Suburbs Roundtable Series highlights challenges older suburbs and downtowns are facing. The Roundtable Series provides a means for networking and exchanging ideas with organizations facing similar concerns. This roundtable discussion will feature presentations on immigrant businesses followed by peer discussion.

Local economic development is of critical concern for municipalities and much effort is put into economic development strategies and initiatives. Actively working to attract immigrant newcomers is an emerging strategy many forward-thinking municipalities are employing. Immigrants represent 28 percent of Main Street business owners and can be found in a variety of businesses, including neighborhood goods and services, restaurants, and accommodations. Local officials understand immigrant-owned businesses contribute to local economic development, and competition is increasing. Learn how this important population segment can help the vitality of your downtown and what campaigns are currently underway in the Greater Philadelphia region.
