May 13: Andrew Howard of Team Better Block in Allentown

As part of the 2014 Spring Planning Forums – Making It Great Now, Andrew Howard, AICP of Team Better Block, a leading expert in placemaking and transportation, will be keynoting a day of sessions focused on revitalization and engaging communities in their future.  Andrew and additional sessions throughout the day will address strategies and methods that can be rapidly deployed, quickly implemented and readily realized to advance local community engagement and revitalization objectives. The forum will focus on the how-to and hands-on of creative asset mobilization, organizational structure, community capacity building, institutional support and civic engagement.  The local option is May 13, 2014 in Allentown.  5.25 CMs are pending approval for the event, including 1.5 ethics credits.

Save the Date: Investing in People and Places

The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) is holding a series of events titled “Investing in People and Places” to discuss the region’s economic development priorities.  The “Investing in People and Places” series is part of the DVRPC’s effort to update the region’s Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy, which is required by the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) every five years.

Join DVRPC, the Economy League of Greater Philadelphia, Select Greater Philadelphia, the Southern New Jersey Development Council, Ben Franklin Technology Partners, and other economic development leaders at one, two, or all three of the “Investing in People and Places” events to discuss Greater Philadelphia’s priorities for economic development, public investment, job creation, and talent retention and attraction. Delaware County Bates Award Nominations Open Until Oct. 14

The 2012 William H. Bates Memorial Award for Outstanding Land Development went to a project in Glenolden Borough titled “Knowles Avenue Pedestrian Tunnel.” The project was completed by Stantec Engineers and nominated by Brian Hoover, Glenolden Borough manager.

The Delaware County Planning Commission is now accepting nominations for the 2013 William H. Bates Award for Outstanding Land Development. These awards, named for the late Chairman of the Delaware County Planning Commission, honor excellence in site planning, development practices, and innovative use of land resources.

Phoenixville Borough, the West Chester Business Improvement District, Historic Kennett Square, the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) and the American Planning Association Pennsylvania Chapter Southeast Section (APAPASE) are partnering for a trolley tour of several Classic Towns in Chester County. On Friday, September 20, 2013, we’re heading to Phoenixville, West Chester, and Kennett Square to tour their downtown redevelopment efforts and historic sites. The event will last from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM and includes both breakfast and lunch. The cost of the tour is $30. Seating is limited. Full details and registration information are available here.

It’s called many names–Graduate Hospital, South of South, and Southwest Center City. Join YIP, the AIA/Young Architects Forum, and Andrew Dalzell, the Executive Director of the South of South Neighborhood Association (SOSNA), for a tour of the Grad Hospital neighborhood. We’ll start out by exploring the restaurants, bars, cafes, and shops on South Street West and then weave our way south and west through the neighborhood, past parks, churches, historic sites, and other hidden gems. Whether you’re new to Philly or a long time resident who just wants a chance to get out an explore the neighborhood, this insider’s tour is for you! The tour will start in front of the Royal Theater (south side of South Street between 15 and 16th) at 10:30 AM and will end at 12:30 PM at Resurrection Ale House–a perfect spot if you want to stay afterwards to grab brunch. The John C. Anderson Housing Project is a significant precedent affordable housing development in Center City Philadelphia that has been undertaken to specifically address the needs of senior citizens in Center City Philadelphia. In the gay community, this demographic group has been overlooked in programming and community planning initiatives until recently. Lessons learned will be shared for an in-house and national (via webinar) audience, highlighting the project management/development, senior programming, LGBT needs, funding, and planning perspectives.
