Audubon/Outward Bound Education Center Proposal in Philadelphia – Comments Sought

2660be2b2df02c41fc17abdbfc676d66_L

The Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Commission (PaRC) is inviting public input on a proposal by the National Audubon Society, an international non-profit conservation organization, and Outward Bound Philadelphia, an affiliate of the national Outward Bound organization, to build an educational center for conservation and leadership development on the banks of the East Park Reservoir next to the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood.  The Audubon/Outward Bound partnership is proposing to develop the 37 acres surrounding a man-made lake that was once part of Philadelphia’s water supply system. The elevated site, which runs along 33rd street in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood, is closed to the public and largely hidden from view by chain link fencing and dense vegetation.  Outward Bound Philadelphia is plans to use the new facility as its headquarters, while Audubon expects to establish a hub for research and science-based conservation projects and programs in the Philadelphia region.  The facility will be known as the East Park Leadership and Conservation Center.  Many entities have voiced their support for the proposal.

In compliance with the Open Lands Protection Ordinance, PaRC is conducting a review of the proposal with opportunity for the public to comment.  View the Alternatives Analysis on the Parks and Recreation Department Web page; the link to the full PDF is posted in Announcements.  To read and post online comments, Click Here.  Those wishing to submit written comments may send them to PaRC via email at: parksandreccommiss@phila.gov .  A public hearing on the Audubon/Outward Bound proposal is scheduled for the February 27, 2013 meeting of the Commission to be held at 6:00 p.m. at Mander Recreation Center, 2140 N. 33rd Street.

Feb. 21: On American Main Streets: A Conversation With Miles Orvell and Sandy Sorlien

February 21, 2:30 PM, Paley Library Lecture Hall, 1210 Polett Walk (Temple University Main Campus)

What is an American Main Street? Is it a memory or image that has been perpetuated through American writing and art? A real space within new urbanist town planning? Or is it a place where some are welcome and others are shunned? Perhaps it is all of the above. Join us to examine these real and imagined notions of American main streets with Miles Orvell and Sandy Sorlien. Orvell is the author of The Death and Life of Main Street: Small Towns in American Memory, Space, and Community (University of North Carolina Press 2012) and professor of English and American studies at Temple. In 2009, he received the Bode-Pearson Prize for lifetime achievement, awarded by the American Studies Association. Sorlien is the author of Fifty Houses: Images from the American Road (Johns Hopkins 2002), and is finishing a book about Main Streets in America with the working title The Heart of Town. She has worked since 2004 on new urbanist plans and codes for walkable streets.

**FREE AND OPEN TO ALL. REFRESHMENTS PROVIDED.**

**Paley Library is located at 1210 Polett Walk, between 12 and 13 Street on Temple Main Campus. The Lecture Hall is on the ground floor, one level below where you enter.**

Next month, Fleisher Art Memorial will bring back its popular Urban Design Workshop.  Through this five-session course, students will examine the theory and practice of urban design, with an emphasis on architecture, public space, and community development.

“Last year we had a great mix of aspiring urbanists, including curious citizens, civic leaders, amateur artists, and experienced designers,” says Benjamin Cromie who is returning as the course instructor. “It’s a great winter project for anyone looking for a new way to explore Philadelphia or cities in general.” Cromie is an urban planner and GIS specialist at CHPlanning in Philadelphia.

In addition to exploring the history of human settlement, students will create a hypothetical design for a real-world site. The course will run on Tuesdays, 6:30-9:30 pm at Fleisher Art Memorial, 719 Catherine Street, from February 12 through March 12. Some drawing required; all experience levels welcome.

APAPA-SE Section Joins Greenbuild 2013 Challenge

The 2013 Greenbuild International Conference and Expo, the world’s largest green building event, will be hosted in Philadelphia from November 20 to 22. Sponsored by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), last year’s conference in San Francisco attracted an estimated 30,000 attendees.

As a lead-up to the conference, the Delaware Valley Green Building Council (the local USGBC chapter) has issued the Greenbuild 2013 Challenge to showcase the region’s commitment to a healthy and sustainable future. The challenge calls on organizations to make pledges that are “related to sustainability, as specific as possible, as realistic (but as visionary!) as possible, and measurable in some way.”

The APAPA-SE Section is joining over 50 companies, institutions, public agencies, and other organizations across the region in making a Greenbuild 2013 pledge. This pledge will direct the section’s 2013 outreach and education efforts – PDI sessions, other section programs and events, and Southeast Blog articles – to increase awareness of sustainability, specifically how planners can work to improve “triple bottom line” (environmental, economic, and social) outcomes in the communities we serve.
