Job Description

DVRPC is looking for a highly motivated technical and creative graphic designer with considerable interest in printing to work directly with the Creative Services (CS) Unit, and with DVRPC staff to design and print materials on a variety of projects. Applicant should be self-motivated, dependable, and enjoy working in a team. Work is performed with considerable artistic and design independence and requires close interaction with staff in meeting their publishing needs. Performance during progress and upon completion is subject to technical review by the Manager, Creative and Print Services. Key job characteristics include:

  • Strong organizational skills and experience with a filing system (hard copy/electronic files).

  • Adaptability to new developments in graphic design and publishing software and hardware.

Responsibilities

  • Confer with DVRPC staff with project message, objectives, specifications, deliverables, and overall design of graphic materials from design concept to final format.
  • Assist with design requests under the art direction of the CS team.
  • Ability to learn from the Publishing Manager DVRPC’s main printing and finishing equipment, record simple instructions for use, and cross-train CS staff on how to use each.
  • Oversee DVRPC’s Products Tracking Publishing section (print distribution request, prepare PDF, and publish report abstract/keywords and PDF to the web).
  • Operate DVRPC printers (2 large digital press machines: Xerox Versant 80 and Nuvera, and 3 Kyocera walk up copiers) and finishing equipment (binding: GBC comb, Fastback neat, twin, staple, 3 hole drilling, cutting, stitcher, rounded edge, and folding machines)
  • Perform routine maintenance on printing and finishing equipment as needed (lubrication, cleaning, replacements of toner, and customer replaceable units (CRU’s)).
  • Keep and maintain inventory, paper, printer parts, binding supplies, and other supplies.
  • Generate monthly volume and usage report for the Xerox and walk-up multifunction copiers.
  • Coordinate auto-replenish (metered) supplies and service calls as needed with DVRPC Purchasing. Regularly requisition printing/finishing equipment consumables (paper, staples, and binding materials).
  • Fulfill staff print requests. Distribute printed materials to author and resource center.
  • Manage Google Calendar for print shop.
  • Catalog print job specifications within Products Database.
  • Continually look for ways to make the print unit a resource for staff.
  • Ability to convey set standards and expectations to staff.
  • Perform related work as required.

Qualifications

  • Considerable knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat), and Microsoft (Word, PowerPoint).
  • Experience in animation (After Effects, Animate CC), photography (Lightroom), and video editing are a plus.
  • Ability to operate equipment following safety best practices.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.
  • Provide printing/troubleshooting coverage during 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with equipment vendors, suppliers, and staff.
  • Knowledge of prepress production (bleeds, crop marks, fonts/colors/graphics, etc.).
  • Ability to accept and learn from constructive feedback.
  • Perform related design, print, and administrative work as required.

Experience and Training

To classify as a level TS II, a minimum of three years of practical experience as a graphic designer is required. Such experience may have been gained from a combination of experience and training. Training may have been gained through graduation from an accredited four-year college or university. Job experience, education, and training operating large printing equipment are a plus. Design examples (via website or hard copy) are required to be submitted with application, and a graphic design portfolio is required if interviewed.
