Professional Development Scholarships – Apply Now!

The PA Chapter of APA is pleased to announce two Professional Development Awards: Jerry S Walls, FAICP Planning Professional Development Award and Irving Hard, FAICP Excellence in Planning Professional Development Award. These awards can be used to cover a range of professional development activities, including graduate or undergraduate planning-related classes, in-depth training on planning-related topics such as but not limited to charrettes and mediation, planning-related workshops such as those offered through APA’s Planners Training Service, or other training relevant to the professional development.

  1. Jerry S. Walls, FAICP Planning Professional Development Award – A scholarship of $2000.00 will be awarded to the Pennsylvania applicant who demonstrates commitment in the field of community planning, involvement in public sector planning, and a desire to enhance their expertise and/or develop new skills.
  2. Irving Hand, FAICP Excellence in Planning Professional Development Award – One scholarship in the amount of $2,500.00 is awarded annually to an outstanding Pennsylvania applicant who demonstrates excellence in the field of community planning, and a desire to enhance their expertise and/or develop new skills.

Join a panel of local experts who will provide an overview of considerations for developing a renewable energy ordinance for solar, small-wind, and geothermal energy systems in Pennsylvania. An overview of Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission’s (DVRPC’s) Renewable Energy Ordinance Frameworks, which include a menu of permissive and restrictive ordinance language options; accompanied by explanatory guidance on the barriers, benefits and cautions for adopting language will be provided. Additionally, panelists will address the key issues surrounding the regulation of each type of renewable energy system at the municipal level.

This session is a part of the 2013 Greenbuild Challenge.

APAPA-Southeast Council Member to Head Up Research at APA National

David Rouse, APAPA-Southeast council member who has spearheaded much of the section’s sustainability work, will soon be heading to Washington, DC to be the American Planning Association’s new Managing Director of Research and Advisory Services.

Philadelphia Trail Master Plan Now Open for Comments

The Philadelphia Trail Master Plan is available for public review until May 31st. The plan is the first of its kind in Philadelphia and was recommended in Philadelphia2035 to coordinate the planning and construction of trail systems in Philadelphia going forward. It inventories existing trails and details and prioritizes 75 proposed trails citywide. The implementation of the plan includes forming a Philadelphia Trail Committee to coordinate proposed trails citywide. The plan will be adopted by the Planning Commission this summer. Public comments on the draft plan are due at the end of May and can be emailed to Jeannette Brugger at jeannette.brugger@phila.gov.

In Memoriam: John E. Pickett, P.E., AICP

John Pickett

“As a society, we need to learn to grow, develop and live in a sustainable manner, so that future generations have the resources they need to continue to prosper.” – John Pickett

John E. Pickett passed away on Friday, May 10, 2013 at the age of 68 after a battle with lung cancer. John had previously survived a battle with prostate cancer. He leaves behind three children – Amy, Evan and Doug.
