Oct 20 – 22 – APA PA Annual Conference!

We invite you to join Pennsylvania’s premier planning event of the year – the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Planning Association (PA APA) 2019 Annual Conference. This year’s conference, “Rally Around Reading: Rivers, Rails and Renaissance” takes place October 20 – 22, 2019 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Reading in Reading, PA. It promises to be one of PA Chapter’s best conferences.

The PA APA Annual Conference provides a unique and effective opportunity to showcase your work and capabilities to planning professionals and policy makers from across the Commonwealth. It’s also one of the ways to support planning in Pennsylvania by providing valuable networking, education, and development for planners.

April 20: Submit interest for APA PA SE Council

***The Deadline is now April 20 to submit your interest in running for office***

This summer we will hold elections for American Planning Association, Pennsylvania Chapter, Southeast Section (APA PA SE) Officers and Council members. Nominate a friend, nominate a colleague, nominate yourself! All nominations are due NO later than April 20th to elections@apapase.org!

We are taking nominations for Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, 6-7 Professional Planners, and 2-3 Citizen Planners.

  • The four Section Council Officer positions consist of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Chair provides leadership and guides the development of the chapter, the Vice Chair assists, the Treasurer maintains the budget and all financial matters, while the Secretary administers the documentation and membership of the organization.
  • A Professional Planner is an individual earning a majority of their income practicing planning or who is retired from such occupation. Professional planners are required to be a member of the Pennsylvania Chapter of APA.
  • A Citizen Planner is any appointed or elected official who is involved in planning decisions for the betterment of a state, region, county, city or municipality; who is
    individual who has an interest in furthering the purposes of Association, but who is not a Professional Planner (for example, planning commissioner, planning official, zoning board member, Philadelphia RCO zoning representative, or similar). Elected citizen planners will receive complementary membership to the Pennsylvania Chapter of APA.

If you are interested in serving either in an Officer or Council member position:

  • New members welcome! No previous experience required.
  • AICP not required to join the board.
  • Review the Chapter Bylaws for descriptions of the Officer and Council member duties and responsibilities.
  • Determine if your schedule will allow sufficient time for the position, generally 1-3 hours/month.
  • Speak with current Officers or Council members regarding any questions or concerns.
  • Submit a nomination and brief biography (3-4 sentences) to the Nominating Committee no later than April 20th at: elections@apapase.org. You may also submit a mission statement and picture.

The official elections ballot will be distributed online in August by APA national to coincide with their election and voting will end in early September. The results of the election shall be published for Section members in October, with official terms to start in January 2020.

Mar. 4: Present at the APA PA Conference in Reading

This year’s conference will be in Reading from October 20-22, with Healthy Communities activities focused on Monday, October 21. Please submit your proposal ideas for proposals by March 4 as outlined at https://planningpa.org/events-training/annual-conference/callforpresenters/.

Proposers are encouraged to submit traditional and non-traditional sessions, plus mobile workshops. Traditional sessions typically involve presentations and audience interaction with an expert panel. Non-traditional sessions can include problem-solving roundtables, “fast-fun-fervent” presentations, and peer-group sessions.

You can get involved by joining one of the Healthy Community in PA’s orientation and information sharing calls to find out about previous work and how your interests fit in. Orientation and Information Sharing call typically the fourth Tuesday of each month at 2:00 p.m.

The Healthy Communities in PA task force envisions communities in all parts of Pennsylvania being built in a way that makes the healthy choice the easy choice for every resident. The Healthy Communities in PA task force achieves its vision through volunteer efforts by planning and health advocates creating tools and resources to assist partners in promoting healthy community design. The tools and resources are created by working groups of task force topic experts collecting best practices needed by Pennsylvania’s healthy community design partners and to create new partners. The American Planning Association, Pennsylvania Chapter is committed to sharing these resources and facilitating discussion around healthy community design in Pennsylvania.
